I have a 65 impala with an original 283 motor and powerglide transmission. I looking to replace the parts but people are telling me i should keep this setup for the car. I don't know much about this motor and was wondering if anyone could help. Can i get a respectable amount of power with this setup by rebuilding and uprading parts or should i just get a 350 and go from there.

This is my opinion..although the 350 would fit and give you more power the powerglide trans would then be the weak link in the setup. There are so many variations of the 350 in power range to consider as well. Not knowing what you want to accomplish in the end, it's difficult to say yes, do the change out. However if you do, keep all the parts from the original in case you desire to go back to original setup. It would also be nice to know which body style you have...2dr, 4dr, or convertable and the overall condition. You also need to consider if braking system is sufficient for a power upgrade. I owned a 65 convertable and it was one sweet ride I wish I still had but was stolen in Cleveland, OH 1974. Police found it 2 weeks later totally stripped out.

I just want a respectable ride. Not something to take to the track but has a nice sound. It's a 4 door. My neighbor has a nice 2 door i wish he would sell. Here's a link to my cars page on cardomain.com. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2269532

I think if the 283 is in good condition you should just do a rebuild and keep it as stock. Another option would be if you could find a 327 which was offered as an option that year but they are hard to find. Larger bore by 1/8th" and different heads and intake. It will probably cost less to go with the 350 but should consider a trans change with that setup if you can find a low mileage 350 and the radiator may need to be upgraded to cool it. I would think to keep it stock would give you the best resale option down the road though.

Personally, I'd go with a GM Crate 572.

The 572 sounds nice but a little out of my price range.
