That's a warning... that you are about to get your transmission rebuilt.
Seriously though, I had the same thing happen to my '98. After a while it stopped going into 3rd gear. Eventually 1st started slipping and then later fluid started pouring out.
From what I've read that's an indication that your transmission has gone into "limp mode" and you need to get it serviced quickly.
I thought it might be an electronic problem when it first started, from some other posts I've read. You can try replacing the Transmission Control Module, Speed Sensors (there are two, vehicle and shaft), Neutral Safety Switch and there are up and down Shift Solenoids. Did I miss any???
None of that worked for me. I had it rebuilt for $1,800.
Good luck.

The flashing O/D light is indicating that there has been a problem detected with your transmission.
I would recommend having a shop read the transaxle codes....these are different from the OBDII codes......
The Flashing O/D light is like the Check Engine light is for the engine and engine control systems.
A fault code is stored...which will be an indication of what you should do to correct the problem.

I had a flashing OD on my 95. It turned out that the speedsensor that I put in when I had the heads off just because it was easy to get at failed! I put in a new speed sensor and it shifts like new with 210,000+ on the whole van.
