97 sl2 won't crank

I bought a high mileage 1997 sl2 1.9 liter with auto tranny. My son was driving it to school, and it died on him. He couldn't get it restarted. I charged the battery, and tried jump starting. It will not crank the motor over. I took the starter off and had it tested at Autozone, they said it was bad. I replaced the starter ($135.00) , and it still will not budge the motor. If you keep trying to start it, smoke comes from the starter. My son checked the oil, no oil on the dipstick. If it was out of oil, it seems you would hear valves clanging, or lifters making noise. He said it died, and wasn't making any noise at all. He was making a hard turn when it died. Put oil in and took spark plugs out to try to crank motor over. Still will not turn over. Spark plug closest to the passenger side was full of oil. Any ideas of what may be wrong with this piece?? Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

remove the serpitine belt to make sure none of the accessiorys are locked up. then try turning the crankshaft by hand with breaker bar and a 21mm socket to see if the engine is locked up. i wonder if when he made the hard turn, what little oil was in the pan was pushed away from the oil pickup tube, and if so it could of run dry then.

Well, we took the serpentine belt off, and all accessories turn freely. We then took all the spark plugs out, and tried to turn the engine with the 21mm wrench, and it would not budge. Now what???
