At the prompting of Blazee I decided to start this thread for us "Retail" workers to share stories/horrors or just gripes about the retail world. I know that Mike, Shawn and myself are Grocery store grunts but what about the rest of you?

I'll get the ball rollin...

My name is Chris and I work at Wegmans in the Grocery dept. I've been in the company a long long time.

The other day I was walking down the back isle when I spotted a woman having trouble putting a case of beer in her cart. We have these new shitty little double decker carts that big stuff just doesn't fit in. She said she was on her way up to the checkout but couldn't fit the beer in. So I offered to meet her upfront with it. Dumb bitch asks " how will you find me?". WTF am I stupid??? I just said that I will find her. I watched as she poked around a couple of isles - going right upfront my ass! I helped a buddy wheel something in the back real quick and grabed the beer making my way upfront. I found the her in line and guess what - the bitch had another case of beer balanced on her cart! Soooo, I hiked that case all the way across the store and all she did was smile at me and say that she managed after all! Let's see how she manages as I beat her over the f*ing head with the other case of beer!!! Just another reason to hate peope!

my biggest thing is that because of a lawsui safeway and other grocers that sell gas can`t give "loyalty" discounts on gas anymore. its not my decision to stop the program, please don`t harass me about it. I do not have the ability to change the friggging state law.what's the savings anyway?? about 1.40 per ttank full. yeah, big whoop dee doo.

another thing... LISTEN TO THE WORDS COMING OUT OF MY MOUTH. when I tell you that an item is located on aisle 15. don`t go to aisle 14 and dumbly say that you still can`t find the damn water chestnuts. I can`t wait to get off tonight!

customers in our store are so stupid and lazy. i do parcel pick up alot so when people randomly leave carts against poles or put them up on the medians it pisses me off. they waste more energy doin that than if they would walking it back to the store.

the best episode i hade with a customer was back in july or august. one of our regular customers comes into the produce department where im workin. this woman is a constant complainer and treats us like shit and we do the same in return but she keeps comin back. anyway she asks me if we have mac apples and i tell her we don't have any until september because they are a seasonal item. she says she has seen them at other stores (which i know was bs) so i took her to the department manager and he said the same. so i told her im sorry i can't help and started to go back to what i was doing. then she makes some comment like "well its like who gives a shit about the customer right". i said if i cant get them and we dont have them then what can i do? she said it would not have happened if we had a woman runnin the department. i told her to go to customer service and get a f*#$@n application. she has not bitched at me since.

Ha blazee we can't get a picture of her while she is there lol we tried. Anywho maybe a smaller ayatollah picture would help? It is provided above lol/

That place is a powder keg waiting to explode. The store manager today pissed off the deli manager by taking her one nightime lady transferring her to salad bar without telling her. Same type of thing happened last week to my manager.

this happened last year while I was on night crew. just wait till some lady comes in, wearing her bathrobe and hair curlers, at 5:15am and chooses a frozen turkey, and wants to know if the turkey will be ready for dinner between 2-4PM. I had to walk away because I was laughing so hard. I think I even pissed myself.

ZL1power69
11-21-2006, 07:30 PM
yea we have had people coming in wanting our turkeys that are 49 cents a pound and we are flat out of them. they bitch at us like its our fault, its not. we ordered a tone of them, they just waited too long. last year we had people coming in the thanksgiving morning wanting turkey :shakehead . they come in running "do u have any turkey?!".... :grinno: , hell no we don't. its not gonna ever thaw in time anyway.

Hate to rain on your bitchfest, but allow me to add a thought or two here.
You must remember that you are not in retail, you are in CUSTOMER SERVICE.
The customer always comes first and is always right..no matter how wrong or ignorant they are.
The customer doesn't need to shop at your store..they have choices and they choose to shop where you work...YOU NEED the customers, they DON'T Need you..if they don't shop there , you will not get that $40 an hour.
I have found that many have forgotten that and how employees treat customers is down right disgraceful.
As a business owner and manager, I have fired employees for disrespecting my customers.
If a customer asks a question, answer it (POLITELY) and if you do not have an item they want, offer solutions (POLITELY).
My wife was in the store the other day and asked about an item that was on sale. The employee told her in a less than respectful tone that they did not have it.
When she asked if they would be getting this item in and could she get a raincheck, the employee told her "Lady we don't have any and that is all you need to know!"
I was in another isle when this happened and when my wife told me, I glanced around to see who it was...It was my lucky day....just happened to be one of MY customers:naughty:
A day or two later that employee came to my shop..lets just say I treated them the same way they treated my wife..After they were done yelling about customer service, I reminded them about their conversation with my wife...the look on their face and the silence was PRICELESS:rofl:

You can bitch all you want, just remember how you treat the customer is a direct reflection on the company you work for...:2cents:

i hate being a checker. thats about what i would make tomorrow, except that this is the first year that i have off on thanksgiving. they figure i cost too much to pay all that extra pay. im under the old union contract which i get time and a half every sunday but double or double and a half on holidays. the new contract just give people a dollar extra on sunday and time and a half on holidays.

1.the sale of goods to ultimate consumers, usually in small quantities

Yes, we do need them to survive. but that doesn't mean they should exploit that, just to get their way. We are not saying that were intentionally rude to customers, but its very hard to be as cheery when you've heard the same question/remark over 200 times per day. come to us nicely about a substitution, DONT DEMAND IT.

I don't get it, you are talking about how to be nice to customers, treat them right, and you're laughing about blatantly being rude to a customer.... because thats how he treated your wife? OK, so with that mentality, I can be rude to anyone thats rude first to me.

honestly, its very rare when our customers are "right". we don't treat them unfairly. im usually pretty calm if someone is complainin. we have some regular customers that are always friendly but others that are just lookin for a fight, and those are the ones that employees tend to loose it with. the sad thing is, they keep comming back for more :dunno:.

the ones that keep coming back are either:
1. starving for human interaction. No matter the type.
2. some, just love to push other peoples buttons, only to see the reaction that is given.

thats awsome. as i stated earlier i had a woman complain that we didn't have the apples she wanted (cause they would not come in for another 3 months cause they are seasonal) and she said it would not have happened if a woman was running the department. i had it at that point and told her to go get a F-in application. she still shops in the store to this day.

If you want to live the customer service nightmare, become part of the automotive repair industry..
1. Everyone is an expert (if you don't believe me read the posts on AF)
2. Customers do not feel that they need to pay for diagnosis
3. Their "mechanic" knows more about cars than I do
4. I always charge too much.
5. It should always be covered under warranty
6. I should stop working to give free repair advice to someone on the phone.

Plus the 200 questions (always the same ones) asked time and time again.
If you deal with customers, you are going to have to suck it up, smile and deal with it.

OK, since you single out my post I think I should respond.

To start, I am in retail. I sell products. You are truely in customer service because you offer exactly that - service. I never stated, claimed or recommended rudeness to a customer. Infact I dare anyone to find a time when I was rude to a customer. I've been doing this my entire working life and I take it pretty seriously. On the other side of that we need a place/way to vent our frustrations so they don't consume us. That's what this thread is for - to share our frustrations and vent the feelings that we can't in front of customers. I do find it interesting that you feel customers are always right and then treat one like shit, even if it is to prove a point.
In my expierience people in the automotive trade are usually the rudest people around.

As for a reflection on the company... Customer service is the highest priority and is reflected by being ranked as one of the best companies in the country. A reputation that I helped to build. You can do the reseach if you feel the need.

I was just gonna post one till I read the Merlin vs Wuzzy deal.i have been tech for 23 ,24, no 23 years, whatever, anyway,I have been employed by a few but have OWNED,MANAGED & WORKED 2 shops. All 3 titles at the same time. The chick behind the desk every now and again but that's it.I have now reached my limit.I had & I mean HAD because I just closed my shop today.Nov,24,2006.The customer is allways right?Really?Works great on paper. You do what you can,you look at the car,you price it out,you break it down, now, soon or when we get to it.Right.Right!Now,when your breaking it all down on this dudes 99 F150 & he needs 3 ball joints & 2 tie rod ends like 20,000k ago, he wants credit because he can't afford it cause he's going hunting. That's sweet.I mean like what the h3ll is wrong with me?No credit? In the back of the truck is a new 4 wheeler, you can bet your azz he got's himself a new rifle, new this and tha tto go hunting with. What about the new car he got his wife, new couch and chair, shall I go on.What about the lady who brought in her Buick that hte fuel pump gave up,she told me straight up she had no cash for at least 2 months.3 days later proceeds to rip me a new one because her car was not done yet.Man I could go on for a month. The whole idea tha tthe customer is always right has changed. Before you argue that fact you have to realize that the customer has changed. The customer "now" does not deal with cash, they deal with credit.Don't tell me you will gladly pay me tomorrow for a hamburger today and then complain that it's cold. The world is a changing place. Now don't get me wrong, the peeps that came into my shop looking for service and expected to pay the bill got 100% service. Those peeps are 30% of the population. As soon as the customer changes thier ways I will change mine.Seriously, how much do you have on credit?

It doesn't matter if you are digging ditches, selling products or rendering a service..it all comes down to one thing..you deal with a customer, that makes your business CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Believe me I have plenty to bitch about when it comes to customers, but I will not do it on a public forum.
I have to laugh at your statement I do find it interesting that you feel customers are always right and then treat one like shit, even if it is to prove a point.
Let me start off with this from my first post.
The customer always comes first and is always right..no matter how wrong or ignorant they are.
If you knew the history of this customer and the problems I have had with them, you would understand what I did and why I did it..I could have jumped into their sh*t at their place of business, but that would not bring any satisfaction....I gave them "an eye for an eye" and enlightened them to their wayward ways :evillol:
Funny part is, my wife was in their store today and that person treated her like a Queen  (same way I treated them when they came to my place of business).

Hey If you helped the reputation of your business, hey great.
My post was directed at those who forget why they work where they work and who ultimately signs their checks..THE CUSTOMER.

you absolutely appeared to have laid the proverbial wood to them when they came to your establishment. Seems like you opened mouth and inserted foot into said mouth.

Anywho most of us in this thread have been working in the retail business for a long time, i have 3 years in 2 grocery stores, 4 years on a paper route which is all interaction with customers, and a summer in landscaping. We all know that the customer is always right but one can not expect to keep getting asked stupid ?s, getting treated like crap from the customers, etc without venting somewhere. Most of us will never vent to their face just put the proverbial smile on our grille and walk away but this thread was CREATED SO WE HAVE A PLACE TO VENT SO ITS OFF OF OUR MIND, hell if something happens to ya and it pisses you off or sticks in your head for a particular reason your bound to recall it for a while afterwards.

I must get asked 20 times a week where is our bathroom when that is the most obvious place to find in a store, i must have gotten asked last week what aisle is your cranberry sauce 100 times, and i get asked countless times in our department when is this product coming in or why is this particular produce empty. I hear people complaining about the price of the product, the quality of the product and if i could i would just walk over and tell them straight up hey instead of bitching aloud to whoever your with when you see me 2 feet away tell me to my face and i will tell you why we have to charge 2.39 apound or why this is poor, just dont go bitching behind my back when im standing their. I just put the smile on my face and walk away. People can be the biggest dixs about stuff and i will almost always try to go out of my way to help them because i know that if i impress you enough for something i have done, i will tell someone i know that hey this guy at Redners in Haven does great work and will try to do whatever you want him to do and that gets around and gets the company more MONEY.

No stress here. I never intended for arguements to start here - just a place for us to vent. I would never suggest "putting" a customer in their place or any other form of disrespect. This is for us to share and for many to realize we all deal with the same stress. In an extreme example take the catholic priest than has no contact with the opposite sex. Well, stress is stress and no outlet for it and guess what happens? Lots of pretty, young boys get it in the end.

I think enough has been said on the issue and I'm done. If you don't agree with the thread then don't participate. The rest - enjoy.

A coworker was bringing up some boxes for a customer when a little girl took her mini cart and broadsided his runner knocking his boxes all over. She looked at him a yelled "Tag - you're it!" and went running off. Funniest shit I've ever seen!!!

It's a good thing we have this thread. I'd hate to see you yield to your urges to touch little boys. :naughty:

I was reading some of these and just made me think back to some of my "experiences". While working at the local Canadian Tire chain store. This store had a large full service, 24 bay shop, it was a busy place. I learned a lot during my time there - including this valuable lesson. Getting back to the story, I was once working on a 90-something sunbird that had to be safetied, and emissioned, some older guy bought for his daughter for her to go to school. They came in booked the car, and once I got the car on the hoist, I noticed the the A-arms were damaged. I wondered whether or not to notify the father and maybe take it back to the guy he bought it from. Before I told him, one of the older techs came to me and said, "forget it, if eveything checks out, don't bother or you'll be sorry" Well the good guy I am, went ahead and informed the customer about the damage I noticed. He told me to pull it off the hoist, and he was going to take it back - no problems all was good. Well, the next day rolls around, I am at work and the father comes back with the car, and begins to accuse me of damaging the car, and he was going to sue, yada yada, screaming and yelling. Shop manager takes him in the office, the owner of the store(franchise store) comes down, I go in the office, and what a joke I couldn't beleive it. I want to just tell this guy to f*&k-off, take you f*&ken car and shove it up you a$$. Ended up the owner and manger agreed to split the cost for putting new A-arms on the car. I was soo pissed, pretty much saying I did the damage, but I wasn't even close to even damaging that car - it was soo sad, so upsetting. The tech who told me not to say anything, came back and just smiled and said "now you know why". I kicked myself for that one, tried to be nice and get a kick in the head.

On the other hand, the front end tech was doing an alignment on a buick on a drive-on hoist, and forgot to chalk the car's wheels, put it up, the car rolled right off the hoist, forward and right into the alignment machine - it almost killed the tech. It was unbelievable. The owner came out, saw his car nose first into the alignment machine. Put the hoist down, drove the car off- not a scratch, small dent in the license plate. The owner didn't even twitch, after all the work was done he drove away - a happy customer. Needless to say the owner got a free alignment, free oil change, car wash and vehicle inspection by a body shop just to make sure all was good.

we get people like that sometimes. they will go through the checkouts and give them to customers or even cashiers. its illegal to solicit in most stores anyway and if they pay with a check, i got all their info right there infront of me to give to the manager so y do it in the first place.

Merlin confused here you typed that she treated her good at her place of business and that you treated her the same way she did when she came to you yet here
you absolutely appeared to have laid the proverbial wood to them when they came to your establishment.

Gotta agree with this all the way. ive been in retail/customer service for 2 years now. you gotta learn that customers arent all smart. you gotta put up with their shit sometimes. just put that smile on and do your best to help them, if you cant, get someone who can. and one more thing...IF YOU CANT PUT UP AND SHUT UP, GET THE HELL OUTTA RETAIL AND JOIN THE FUCKIN MILITARY!!! YOU DONT BELONG IN RETAIL/CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!

So this week now i have had two customers in that could not have been more happy with my service. The first one was mid 30s lol we all know how we tend to let our eyes wander well she sauntered over and what not and she needed more kale and wanted to know if we had red beets. I said i would get her the fresh red beets from the cooler since the ones we had packaged were pretty bad(hence why new ones had been ordered) and the kale i had to get from the cooler. So i sashayed back and got the stuff came out and she just could not get over how nice i was about it, and how i was real friendly and polite. I think i killed 20 minutes talking to her.

Then today, there was a lady in and she asked me if we had figs. I knew we had them in produce so we went over to where i knew they were but we could not find them, so i went up front to ask if they were moved and of course they were not. So i said to her how we did not have them in stock now but i would let my manager know so that we would have them in the future, well i went back to where i thought they were and there they were. So i took them up front to CS and gave them the description of the lady that wanted them, then i went and found the lady and told her who to get them from, and what not. She could not believe that someone would go out of their way to find the product after we had both looked, then taken it up front to the CS, then went and found her. She just kept saying how we had the best employees, and that she would shop here again because of me and the lady in CS, and that how the manager here should be thankful for the great customer service that we offer. That is what i call touche.

Its been too long with out a stupid question, what do i do?

i work at Target and today someone decided to take a mirror that was a display model. She comes up to me when I have a pizza in my hand headed for the breakroom. She asks me if she can get a discount on the floor model. I was polite and said unfortunately you cannot take the display model, find one in a box and you can take it. Turns out there was no more of those mirrors. I was found out that there was no more in the backroom either and said that I was sorry and we were out of it. She got all mad and asked for my name. I told her and she went up to the damn cashier and said that I told her she could have that display model when I said she couldnt. God I wanted to slap her.

I also hate when people ask where the bathroom is or where guest services is when its right next to them when they walk in...........

There's only one part of people's stupidity that I love. Its when the dumbasses struggle with the carts that always cracks me up. Sometimes the plastic flaps on the carts will lock into another one and they struggle to pull them apart. Its funny to go up to them and show them how easy it is to just lift the flap and make them look stupid....

Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
im ready to rip him limb from limb he comes in and asks me what muffler i have nad i tol dhim nothing its off so he goes out nad is gettin ready to take the fronts off when the guy tells him its the back
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
so he goes to get the backs off and he comes in to tell me that what i brought in was as bad as whats on the truck, i tell him that i know but i have a bulge in my sidewall in the rear and bald is better than an exploding tire
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
he tells me that it is safer to have a bulge tire than bald and that he cant put them, so i said fine take it out i dont work done and i dont wanna buy tires. he then tells me that he wants 2 rangers one thats 4x4 and one thats 2x4 and hat he wants to swap the suspensions and that i should put a manual in my automatic truck w this glasspack for better gas mileage
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
im starting to get irate so i goto pay for my stuff and i said to the mohawk asshat back there i want the phone number for the district manager he goes whats the problem i tell him[ so he brings back the assistant store manager
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
she has a lazy eye that i wanted to smack straight off her face and shes telling me that him talkin about the ranger is not the issue its the tires i said i understand but its part of the whole thing because i want tires not bs and all this so shes like lets go outside and see the tires. so i showed her the bulge and i told her the problem and he shows her that they are the same and i said to her
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
i understand that but u can not drive w a bulge on a tire and she said to the kid that too then she is telling me that they will only do the one and i said no i want both because you can not have two different tire patterns because it will cause a vibration and well she is arguing with me that you can have two different sizes one in front one in back i said to her im not arguing that im arguing ti
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
re patterns so i said to her if i sign off on it will you do it and she said yes so im like ok but i want you to sign off on the fact that he revved an ice cold engine incase a day 6 weeks from now i have an engine failure i have someone to go back to because that is stupidy and she agreed and then she said that to us both that he was fired and we went back inside and they then called the other ma
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
nager back and he said to us she should have just given us 4 new ones for our trouble but that i was rite you can not have two different tread patterns and you can not drive with a bulge
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
so they locked the doors and we had to go out the front door and back to my truck, we get in and have the cart there and all and were getting ready to go and thie kid that got fired comes out pissed off screaming at us that we have to push that cart back to the corner of the parking lot and i said to him im not obligated to do that im a customer you go out front of tihs store you are gonna see a h
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:
alf dozen carts in the parking lot i then said to him inside you have cart pushers that get paid 515 an hour to do this and if its such a big deal to you go get them to do it and he is all you gotta push it back and then he goes i hope you hit and i said to my friend ok he wants it i went forward came back in reverse hit this cart htat it spun around and left
Shawn....s10blazerman4x4 says:

Anyone ever have the dumbasses that come up and say do you work here??? Whenever someone says that I just wanna say, "no you stupid ass I'm just wearing this red shirt, khakis, and this target badge as a fashion statement."

I get that a lot.. another thing that I get, is that when I go in to do my personal shopping, with blue jeans and a t-shirt. I'll get stopped in the aisles by people who i've rung up before. I would goto the store a closer to me, but IMO its a dump. I'd rather drive the extra 3miles one way to a cleaner store.
