shifter problems... maybe worse?

i was driving through a stop light, i started to shift into 2nd and something broke it seems. im not exactly sure what, but i no longer have 2nd, 4th, or reverse.... its been a challenge to drive... i thought it might have been my rig that i installed at the bottom of my shifter to the end of the shifter cable (the plastic piece broke so i replaced it with a wrench socket and a screw i drilled through the ball on the bottom of the shifter). but anyways, i can still shift into 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

the shifter sits a more of an angle, back, towards where 2nd 4th and R used to be, but it just stays in neutral when i try to shift it to one of those...

i dont know if its the shifter cables or something i could easily fix.... i dont really have the money to buy new shifter cables anyways.

if anyone can provide any insight, that would be great, otherwise, im gonna probably have to take it down the the saturn dealership or something.

you may want to check your fix out again. you shouldnt have done that though to the shifter. zip ties work fine for a while, but a guy makes replacement pieces you can stick in place for $30 and less.

now another problem has been been the side arm coming out. but this would cause a problem for going into the next line of gears, meaning 1,2 is a line, 3,4 is a line, and 5,R is a line. but first thing to do is pull the center console off and check the shifter out. your fix could have broke, the cable hold down could be an issue (this happens to people who dont seat it properly). ive heard of many people not seating it properly to the groove in the cable and it pops out causing shifting difficulties.

i would think more of the problem being right under the console. i doubt its outside, yet its possible.
