'97 Sable Trans suddenly stopped working

I have a '97 Sable with the DOHC V6, auto trans and around 165,000 miles. Trans and engine both have always seemed strong...no history of trans slip. As I was driving the other day around 35mph my trans just stopped working. I was in gear and revving but no power. I pushed the car home. I can go thru all the gears as normal and the car doesn't move in park...however, none of the other gears respond. Is there a electrical plug somewhere that may have come loose that would make a trans suddenly stop working? All fluids are normal and clean. Car has been well maintained. Any ideas?
Note: My girlfriend said she drove her car off the edge of curb earlier that day and the drivers side bounced a bit, but I inspected the car and see no damage or evidence. I mention this because I'm thinking maybe a jarring bounce could loosen an electrical connection.

My 98 Sable tranny died as I went to pull away from a stop light.
Just quit with no prior warning. 86,000 miles.
Broken pump shaft $2300 rebuild.
Works fine now

With that number of miles, I would guess that the transmission is shot. To answer your question, Yes, a transmission can just quit. Mechanically failure inside of it can cause it to just stop working. Park isnt a gear is the reason it doesnt move in park.
