Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to replace the struts on a 2000LS?

With ~125K they feel a little soft.

Thanks!

The front struts require a spring compressor to remove the upper mount and would best be left to a garage if you don't have the proper tools. Those springs are under extreme pressure, and could cause serious injury. The car will also require a 4-wheel alignment when you're done.

Actually Rich the complete strut assembly can be removed without applying or using the spring compressor. Once the strut assembly is off the car then you need the compressor to swap out the strut. You can rent the spring compressor or buy your own. Not that expensive.

Strut jobs are done DIY all the time even by the inexperienced but I agree it is less of a hassle to have a shop do it for you.

Also, with your mileage you may need other parts replaced such as upper strut mount/load bearing and other rubber bushings/insulators.

I guess should have specified the spring compressor is needed after the strut is removed from the car to transfer the spring to the new unit, thanks for the clarification Bob. Monroe is starting to offer a complete , ready to install front strut/spring/mount assembly, too bad they're only available in Sensa-trac's.

I am curious why you say "too bad they're only available in Sensa trac's?? Not sure what you mean by that...
In a related recent post on Buick ride, would it be possible to use a softer spring rate to replace that of Impala if you could find size and fit?

IMO, Monroe Sensa-Tracs are junk. They give a wallowy ride and have a tendency to make groaning noises. Monroe used to be "THE" aftermarket strut to buy, but I no longer feel that is true. KYB is the best, non-oem strut out there.

Ok, that a reasonable explanation
