Carbon fiber substitute??

Okay, this may be another useless thread, but I have been really hoping there is some way to simulate carbon fiber, at least decently, without expensive CF decals, such as by SMS. Don't get me wrong, these decals are totally awesome; it's just that, on models like the Mercedes CLK-GTR, which I have and love the looks of, and the Ferrari Enzo, I don't wish to burn up a whole sheet of these beautiful and costly decals on the huge carbon fiber underpan, which no one will really even see. On the other hand, I don't want to just cop out and paint the undertrays black, with no pretensions of carbon fiber weave. I have seen a tutorial in this forum about painting carbon fiber by using a fine mesh as masking material, but I have yet to find such a fine mesh. So are there any other viable methods? I may have worked myself into a block, and will just have to bite the bullet and buy some more awesome/costly SMS. (I may end up wasting some of the one sheet I have when I'm trying to learn how to use it with MicroSet and MicroSol). But if you have any suggestions or methods you use, I would be really glad to know about them. Or maybe where I can find some of that fine mesh (flexible, like cloth)...

What i do: I paint a mix of silver and black, clear coat it with smoke and polish it. You get a a carbon look-a-loke wich is definatly different then black (expecially from a dictance). It's by no means a substitute for "real" carbon on let's say a GT-wing or for a entire carbon body. But for those not-really-vissible parts, it's good enough for me.

If you want to use a mesh. I found some fine mesh people use for a filter to make paper. Some hobbyshop have it. It's a bit finer than the mesh in some tamya kits.

try looking for the screens used for silkscreen printing. this has the finish mesh I've seen so far and very cheap

Thanks guys. I never thought of using nylons. I might try one or more of these ideas.
