P1405

I have P1405 DPFE Sensor Upstream Hose Off Or Plugged error code in freeze frames. I found on Ford Scorpio forum that this could be caused be rattling catalyst (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/egrmonitor.htm). It even stuck the exhaust, so I had problems to get over 3,500rpm. On the way to the garage I got “P1151 Lack of HO2S-21 Switch, Sensor Indicates Lean” but it was the only once. Indeed, I had to replace both catalysts, cause they “disappeared” which is no wonder after 200.000km. But the P1405 still comes out after few km of driving. It doesn’t light the MIL, but the OBD2 shows it in freeze frames. I guess it is the powder from catalyst which stuck the DPFE sensor or something else happened when the exhaust was stuck. How should I get to that pipe to check it/clean it and make my work easy? It’s on the rear block so I’ll have to do it from beneath of car. Thanks for suggestions.

Hi
FWIW I helped a friend with the same code on his explorer with the 8 cylinder engine. In his case, the plastic "pipe" coming off of the DPFE had cracked and broken, and the hose was just hanging there. He also had what sounded like lifter noise coming from the forward right cylinder. We replaced the DPFE and it took care of the light, and the "lifter" noise.

The DPFE sensor has 2 hoses going to it from the exhaust and need to be carefully inspected. Also remove the DPFE and look in it for dirt/crud.
