Whining coming from ABS pump (2001 Montero)

So lately I've noticed a loud whining coming from under the master cylinder area, which seems like the abs pump. This happens every single time I push the brakes. It's very annoying and I'm starting to worry.

Braking power hasn't been affected. However, if I repeatedly push the brakes, the abs light will come on for a second then bleep, and then turn off.
I am thinking of buying the service manual (4 volume one) Anyone have any experience with this?

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Have a dealer or qualified mechanic check it out. I wouldn't mess w/ your abs system unless you know how to.

I am pretty knowleadgeable when it comes to this stuff. I'm into hondas, I've done engine swaps. But most civics don't really give you any problems with this kind of stuff, so ABS is unknown territory right now. Oh well, might as well buy the manual. I still might have it checked out tho, just in case. Whenever there is something like this bothering me, I have it checked out and they tell me what it is, and then I fix it myself. This is my dad's car btw.

Thanks man. Any other comments or ideas?

We will get the obd2 code reader at autozone asap. Will this read ABS codes?

In hondas this is a completely different module (brain). Is this all one thing that can be accessed thru the code scanner??

Hi. I'm also experiencing the same whining problem with my Montero (2001). Did you ever find a conclusion? I've tried bleeding the brakes, and that helped a little with the whining, but eventually the whining returned.

Has anyone found an answer to this? Or does anyone know where I can get the part? My local dealer wants $1200 for the ABS assembly/module and pump.

Actually, this is an issue that Mitsubishi did a recall on back in 2001. While the recall has expired now, Mitsu did provide an extended warranty on the part in case of any future problems. They extended it to a 10-year, 150,000 mile warranty.

Just take it to your dealer and explain what is happening and tell them about the warranty. Quick, free fix.
