ok my wifes grand am started this problem about a year ago.We havent been driving it much since then.It doesnt seem to be running on all 4 cylinders (quad 4).The car sputters bad when there is a load on it ,like when trying to pull hills or tromping on the throttle. It starts fine and idles with a little miss.the check engine light is on and flashes when it sputters. As it is sputtering it seems as if all cylinders will run then don't.I replaced fuelfilter, coils, coil pack cover, fuel injector, air filter,o2 sensor by the catalitic converter, and plugs and plug boots. When this problem first started it was sputtring real bad and allmost diddnt make it home.Just a few minuets later the catalitic converter melted inside and started blowing out chuncks of the insides. It also has a rich fuel smell when runing. If anyone has had a problem like this please reply.

I am have what seems to be the same exact problem minus the convert blowing chunks. i just recently swap the motor in my 93 GA and went from a sohc to a 92 dohc and only thing to make it a little better was get a 94 dohc cpu but i still have that problem. i think it might be my crank position sensor fouling under a load, im gonna swap it out with the one in my other block. If it works i'll let you know

Does your RPMs on your gauge drop to 0 when this happens?? If so Im pretty sure its your Cam Position Sensor... Same thing happened to my brothers Altima 'cept they call it a "cam angle sensor" It did it only when it was hott too.. Then is was completly shot and only ran for like 5-10 sec increments and just died.. Easy fix and cheap
