Motor Mounts and Transmission mounts
Death to Ford

Hi there
I just want to know if there is a service time for when the motor mounts need to be changed. I just helped my friend change them on his contour and the car drives so good now. I had the motor mounts changed in 1999 due to some recall but haven't touched them since.
Also is there transmission mounts that need to be changed since I have been hearing lots about transmission mounts lately.
Thanks DTF

I am currently doing this very job on my 95. The front mount was broken and the motor was moving. I would't change them unless they're broken. To check them, open the hood, watching the motor, holding the brakes, engine running, have someone move the shift back and forth from D to R. It shouldn't move more than....say 1/4 to 1/2". If a mount is broken you will see more movement from that mount.
There are 3 mounts on the Windstar. One in the front of the motor, one in the back of the motor, and yes the trannie has on too, on the right on the end of the trannie.

Dan

You can also check for excessive movement by gunning the engine in park. Loud "clunk" noises from the front end when hitting bumps or going from D to R are sometimes due to bad engine mounts. Inspect them. Do they look crushed? If you do decide to change them, I would change them all at one time.

Death to Ford -
Contours are noted for requiring motor mounts (particularly on manual-transmission models) and the 'roll resistor' regularly. I don't believe Windstars are nearly as hard on motor mounts.

I finally got around to changing the tranny mount which wasn't hard to change at all, but i am still having vibration problems and I am going to go ahead and change the engine mounts. I just want to know how people changed these, was it hard or does it just take time. Do you need to have 3 bar engine support or can you change them another way with jacks supporting the engine.
Thanks

bump!
i'm wanting to do the same. didn't know if using a floor jack and some wood on the oil pan was safe enough for this job.
