A/C Need recharging???

I think my A/C needs to be recharged but I am not sure. Here's what happens: I start the van, put it on Max A/C and the fan on hi. Wait about 5 minutes and the van is nice and cool. Later on, the van warms up and can't be cooled down again. The air coming out "seems" cool, but I can't tell if it's as cool or not. What I think is happening is: as the system heats up, there isn't enough R-134a to keep up with the heat in the vehicle/air, but it does the best it can.
I am gonna get a set of gauges and a recharge kit probably this weekend, I am just looking for confirmation that I have a sound theory before I do. :yikes:
Thanks.

You will know if you need more r134a when you put the gauges on. There are other items that can cause poor cooling.
