windstar AC Problem

I need some basic details on troubleshooting AC problems on my sis windstar '98. I've done a search on this topic but not much came back.
Problem. AC blows Hot Air.
I went to the store and bought an d R-134a refrigerent sealer and charger but the connector does not fit it.
I believe this vehicle uses R12. can someone confirm?
Can this system be re-charged?
In the engine compartment, on the passenger side there is a tank. i'm assuming this is part of the AC parts and this is where the plug adapter was.
Can I recharge R12? if so is this something I can but at a autozone or auto parts place?

There should be a label underhood ... perhaps near the radiator that tells what type, and how much, of refrigerant is used in your vehicle ... also how much lubricant is used.
I would expect your van to use R134a refrigerant and PAG lubricant.
Make sure you are trying to connect to the low-pressure fitting. The hi-pressure fitting is a different size ... and you don't want to connect to it as the pressures there are high enough to blow the refrigerant can apart.
R134a fittings are quick-connects. R12 fittings are screw types.
R12 is not being produced anymore. And the quantities left are to be sold only to certified
refrigerant technicians.
BTW, if there is currently no/low pressure in the system ... the system may be "open" or "atmospheric" ... if so, you would want to get it service by someone who knows how to evacuate the system using a very hi-vac pump (for an hour or so) to remove all moisture and air ...possibly replacing some lost lubricant ... all before recharging with refrigerant.
