Front Spindles on a 65 SS mounted on wrong sides?

I recently converted the drum brakes to disk brakes on my 1965 Impala ss. After the job was completed the front tires seemed to have moved forward and rub the front of the fender on turns. The tires did not rub prior to the conversion.

What could possible cause this? I was told that possibly the spindles were mounted on the incorrect wheels. (The mechanic referred to having them mounted backwards. IE: Left spindle mounted on the right wheel and visa/versa)

What was changed with the conversion? I know that there are more than one kit on the market and they come with different parts.

The stock spindles and steering knuckles unbolt, if you removed or replaced any of those parts it might be possible to have mixed up something. I would have thought that the spindles themselves would be symmetrical, but perhaps not.

And when they're installed, its hard to eyeball it up. My best idea would to locate and borrow another '65 spindle somehow and measure it up to see if the balljoint holes are off center from the centerline of the spindle.

Bob, good advice, the mounting angle of the ball joint boss on the spindles is different left to right.

I ran into a friend of mine last night that did the disc conversion on his Olds Cutlass, he has the same problem. His kit came with replacement spindles, which for manufacturing purposes are made to work on either side of the car.

Try contacting the maker of your kit, I'm sure you're not the only one with this problem.

Thanks all for your input. I took the car to another mechanic and he seems to think putting the spindles on the other wheel should correct this.

Should be able to see different angles on the knuckle for the joint flanges, hope it works out.
