99 Grand Am security problem

So (like apparently a lot of Grand Am owners) after 6 1/2 years of other problems, my Grand Am is now locking up in security mode for 10 minutes (maybe 1 out of every 30 or so starts) and I get to sit and wait until trying again. I read the quick fix of installing a switch on the yellow wire, but the problem is on the 99 the casing around the ignition makes this nearly impossible. I can just barely get my fingers in around the wires in question, but would have essentially no shot at properly snipping and rewiring off of them. The casing in front of the ignition cannot be removed, and the wires in question have almost no slack whatsoever, so they can't be pulled outward.

So I was just curious if anyone else has any solution specific to the 99 Grand Am. I wouldn't mind taking it to the dealer and paying a few hundred dollars, but I've also read posts from people who did that and the problem just resurfaced later. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Why the hell did Pontiac ever add this stupid, unreliable and unwanted security system! :P

:uhoh: I believe you can access the wire in quetion through the radio opening. but its a bad idea hacking into the wiring .

Yeah, that's where I went through. There's really no easy access to it. The GA99 is poorly-designed all over (cupholder, lights replacement, etc) and there's metal casing in front of the ignition that cannot be moved. I can either loosen the ignition and push it back, so that I'm able to finger the wires through the ignition hole (but not pull them out) or I can reach it under the air conditioning controls, but not see it or pull it out. Neither is a clear enough passage to wire anything. :(

Hacking that ignitoin wires NOT going to fix the problem at all !! :nono: :screwy:

First I'd try a new ignition, and make sure your keys are clean, so it'll make good contact in the ignition switch.

My better half had this issue with our SE, after I removed the 5lbs of crap on the keychain, the security light went away and has not returned :dunno:

Either way good Luck !!
