Gear Shifter Rattling

I have a '99 Windstar. The gear shift lever has loosened up over time and now rattles. It is driving me nuts. Has anyone tried tightening or replacing the spring that I assume holds the shifter in place? Or is it another part that needs to be tightened?

Hmmm - I just looked at the shifter on my 2000 (probably the same as yours). The joint where the lever attaches - and the likely source of your rattle - is under a black plastic boot. Looks like the plastic pieces covering the upper steering column need to be removed to see what's going on.

Anyone done this on a similar-year Windstar?

I have the same problem. It really is annoying. I am glad someone finally posted a question about it. This is such a great site I am sure someone will find the fix.:screwy:
