'05 Ferrari 575 GTO

Hi all.

I guess a body kit on a Ferrari is a kind of a bit un-sacred, considering the myth that turn around Maranello.

BTW: just Maranello! I tought to let born a whole classic, starting from the 575M, I redone the GTO!!!!

The 550/575 is for sure one of the most popular ferraris but I ever tought it a bit dull, what I like is a badass ferrari: I start to work with this concept in mind, at least the result is similar to the racing GTC, may be worst, but that have some similarity with the '62 GTO, and some other with the '88 one (coca-cola shape): few sketch with progettual intents.

So I got down the body work: some styrene strips as reinforcements and sape guides and putty, a lot of putty :). So far I start with the new Light Curing putty: it's magic, just 1 minutes of sun and it's rock. But I guess its usage isn't for model shapes: may be to fill or something. BTW I find out really good and hard (in the positive way) to sand and mill down. So I used (insthead common Milliput) the Tamy quick 2P putty: I find out really good to sand and mill but at least I still prefere the milliput to do shapes. So job done on fenders&spoilers: I also open front and side vents.

So far the rough putty job: I feel better Milliput, that I'll shape up and water-smooth like I want, but Tamy seem better on sanding/milling jobs:

Finally, after some primer test (4) I had a decent result, with sharp panel lines and not flaws: so I sprayed the whole body shell with Tamiya grey primer.
A mixed finishing workflof at test this time: Grey and white Tamy primer, Lecher Rosso Corsa flat base (automotive stuff) and finally, after decal jobs, 2P clearcoat.

Now it's white, only for few hours, after a light sanding (Tamy 2000 grit)..

May way to mask off white under decals: I draw the shapes on a tracing drawing paper, trasparent kind x architect, so I redraw the shape in teh back side and transfert it, by redrawing in front, in the Tamy masking tape, placed on a gloss surface, I'm trying to preserve the mask glue. After that I cut carefylly the mask and... used it ;)

So it's time to spray some Rosso Corsa: my intention was from start to use Rosso Scuderia (I purchase original PPG kind) but I found it tricky to shoot and.. a bit strange with ITA flag so I purchase a cheaper Lecher Rosso Corsa , aka the PPG code 75250, late kind: used from '97 to now; it's a professional flat base.

I print out needed decals on a white BMF decal sheet: the GTO logo is printed from a friend on a ALPS. Also this step was a bit tricky due to the transparency of the white decal over the masked white (well at least sanded white primer ;)) I had to do some touch up: hoping to have a better result after clear.

I done some jobs also on front vents, after some experiments I drawn some developed shape on illustrator, glued on a thin metal board, cut and fold it: those is the final shape: now I need to do some black priming and carbon fiber jobs :)

I guess something different: better something 19": or the enzo wheels in black like the FXX or some modified NS-GT (18") or some 19" BBS (that I love in the sharp old shape): I'll do some test. Here you'll see the windshield decal and some GTO logos on carbon to use on license plate. Also the carbon-ceramic brakes from enzo :)

as a ferrari afficiando, i cannot condone the butchering of so sacred an automobile to create a "tuner" vehicle. nothing can improve upon what maranello produces; their vehicles are the pinnacle of automotive excellence, and any who dare desecrate them with -- GASP! -- a body kit shall surely burn in hell.

A bit of update:

I realized a problem on the "nose" of my GTO: too many layers of decals and paint, too much transparent white decals: was better after a light sanding and a clearcoat but not perfect. So I decided to sand down clearcoat, decals and a bit of color :1: not the happyest work in the wordl. This time I rescribed gaskets lines around windows and... I redone transparents trought warmcast.

Everyone own a Fujimi 550/575 know that the worst parts are transparent's fittings: body shell isn't beveled inside and.. the fit is not perfect and you'll see a good mm of air in few points from body and winshied top: not well engineered. No problem: aren't we modellers? Where's teh fun? Doing hard adventures (to me at least :2cents: )

By steps:

I drawn the transp. part outline (base) on a balsa wood at start and on a plywood after broken the balsa :2cents:, than I fix with clay the tarsparent (we'll call it mould from now) leaving some mm under it. May be someone will have some better results with a stronger mould like a resin cast piece: I want to try with the original part and all come ok.

Than I warm up the acetate board (fixed to the plywood/balsa) with a body shop's phon (few bucks at hardstone, no professional stuff) and push the wood trought the mould.

Nothing difficult: some attempt was neede only to find out the better material (girl's sexy slip box :2cents: ) since the bords from my LHS was quetly thick and those done some micro-bubbles after heating. With thin acetate all was ok.

I treced outlines with a felt marker and cut out with some lexan scissors wich I use on RCs: definitely better than std. scissors.

Now transparents are quetly dirty (alcohol bath to remove felt pen is needed) but suit perfect this beast windows: I done also some other few mods, I blind out the third window: I plan to replace it with a carbon pattern with the original window shape (aka 911GT)

I think it was a really cool concept to close off the rear quarter windows - it gives a great aggresive, racing look to the lines.

Use compound and wax on the acetate and it should polish up very nicely

Wow Gio. Seeing you make windows is really impressive. I've always wondered how to go about doing it since clear resin casting doesnt have nice results. Now the options for modeling are limitless. Thanks!

Kevlar decals are the S27 kind and black glue line are the s27 carbon kind

I done some job on dashboard: I removed plastic vents and replaced by some PE vents I done, I also turned the aluminium rounded surround.

I cutted out the radio and replaced it with a square board: I need to rdo the PE job since I screwed it with a marker doing edges: it should receive teh "start" button and some few switches.

Since teh fujimi kit represent a manual gear car, I converted mine in a F gear kind doing the backup plate: I milled down teh plate (3.5by5.5mm), turned the buttons and the lever.
