Hi there
I just wanted to know about a couple of things
1. When you hold down the odometer reset button and turn the ignition to the ON position it does a test such as guage, bulb, dtc..... What do all of these codes mean and is there any way to check if these codes are correct or if there is any problems with my engine?
2. When is the timing chain on the winny supposed to be changed or adjusted or anything like that?
Thank you

Hmmm -
On my 2000 Windstar LX, all dashboard light bulbs are tested each time the ignition is turned on, independent on the odometer reset button.
The timing chain on the Windstar 3.8 engine requires no regular service or adjustments. Unlike belt-driven camshafts, it also has no regular replacement interval.

I am curious as to what test holding down the odometer while starting does.
In any event as long as your CEL comes on when you start the engine (self test) and then goes out and stays out then you do not have any emissions related issues. Similarily if the warning lights stay off after starting then these items have passed any self test and/or monitoring and are most likely okay.

I tried the test that was mentioned and it does go through a series of self tests including gauge tests. Does anyone know anything about these self tests? Is it written anywhere (alldata etc)? I suspect this test could come in handy for anyone who is experiencing a gauge problem. At one point it looked like it was constantly monitoring information from the fuel gauge. (The odometer display said fuel and there was a number that moved around slightly of about 221 give or take). I suspect that this is some sort of 8 bit data stream or something as I did it just after almost filling it up so it was close to full.

Here's what I found on Alldata:
Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes
To enter the Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode, depress and hold the instrument cluster trip odometer/reset button and then turn the ignition switch to the RUN position and then continue pressing the trip odometer/reset button until tESt is displayed in the odometer. The trip odometer/reset button must be released within 3 seconds of the odometer displaying tESt to begin the dealer test mode. Depress the trip odometer/reset button to advance through the following steps until DTC is displayed. Depressing the trip odometer/reset button will display any continuous DTCs stored before proceeding to the next step.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position or press and hold the trip odometer/reset button for 3 or more seconds and release to exit Instrument Cluster Dealer Test Mode.
There are a couple of GIF images from the service manual that detail the tests and the codes, but I don't have anywhere to host them. If someone knows a good place, let me know...

WOW!!!
Usefull information.
However, this looks like it is for the electronic instrument cluster ONLY.
At least, that is the only way that the odometer can display anything but the mileage numbers.

I went through the test. Yeah it is a 99 with an LED odometer. Looks like a lot of information including a digital version of the tachometer. I even tried it with the engne running. There is also what looks like an 8-bit reading for battery voltage (again I tried with engine running and trying different loads.). The was also a fuel level reading. It fluctuated as I jumped up and down on the seat.
There was a gauge test and a bulb test that illuminated lights for icons of options I don't even have.
There was also a lot of dtc s that worried me. My CEL is off but I have had some tranny trouble.
I will post the complete data dump when I can.
I think we may have stumbled upon a great set of built in tests that is not very widely known.

I have the scans from the Ford service manual if you want them. They show all of the different tests, the results and what they mean. I can email them to you or I can send them to someone to host on the web...

Useful info! I need to go play with mine. If anyone find further info on these tests, please post it.

I played around a bit on my way to work this morning. One of the outputs is a digital speed readout. Both in mph or Kph. I discovered that when the digital (from the odometer) is at 100 my actual speedometer reads 105. So all these years I thought I was speeding when in fact I wasn't......lol.

That's kind of wierd about the speedometer. Was it really like 5mph difference? I remember when I was going past one of those police radar things that displayed your speed, it was about 5mph less than my actual speed. I wonder if there is something wrong.

Well actually it was 5 K/hr off at 100 K/hr. So about 3 MPH at 60. This actually did not surprise me. (Maybe it should have.)

Hello once again
http://www.focushacks.com/index.php?modid=37
http://mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/dtcodes.htm
These 2 websites might help people out since there are a dtc definitions for the focus and mustang so they might be the same for the windstar.
I have dtc 9600 and 9681 which means PATS responder or ignition key, does anyone knwo what this means?
I also have DTC 9676, d262, and A513 but dont knwo what they mean?
Hope this helps

Ok I found out what some of these DTC's mean
DTC
9676-Battery Voltage out of range
A513-Blower (Fan) Circuit Failure
D262-MIssing SCP message
9205-IC Switch assembly circuit failure
9213-Anti-theft number of programmed ignition keys is below minimum
A103-Antenna Not connected
9342-ECU defective
A139-PCM ID Does not match between IC and PCm
A175-A/C Request signal circuit short to ground
9470-Lamp Headlight input circuit failure
9352-Ignition key in circuit failure
A586-Headlamp Mode circuit failure
A477-Module Configuration failure
A176-Overdrive Switch Circuit Short to Vbatt
I have some more but too tired to type anything else so just ask if you cant find your code
I hope this help but if anyone can help me find some info on the top three bolded DTC's since I am having problems with these that would be great

I think I have the same DTC's on my van. It's probably normal, just as long as the engine light is not on.
