Battery Replacement

I need to replace the battery. I need advice on removing the box forward of the battery in order to get access to and loosen the clamp that holds the battery in place?

With the help of the Saturn dealer parts rep, the change-out was easy (even for a girl :boink:) and saved me $50.

The plastic box mounted immediately forward of the battery is a modulator (for the fan i think), and must be removed from the mounting bracket. The bracket is at the back of the box (so inbetween the box and battery) and is the same piece that clamps down on the battery. Use a flat screwdriver to free the locking tab and slide box upward. The box may need to be pryed a little as it does not slide easily. Once free of the bracket, push the box out of the way to access the battery. Do Not Disconnet the box connectors. The rest is obvious. Unscrew the clamp, battery cables and lift out.

Auto parts stores spec out a 75 series battery, but you'll need the 78 series. This should be labeled on the original equipment.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Disconnect the positive battery cable.
Important: It is not necessary to disconnect the fan control module wiring from the module.


Remove the fan control module by sliding up and off the bracket. Lay the module and the wiring out of the way.
Remove the battery insulating cover.
Remove the battery hold down/fan control module bracket.
Caution: Do not tip the battery over a 45 degree angle or acid could spill causing serious personal injury.

Remove the battery.
Installation Procedure




Verify the battery tray is clean.
Install the battery.
Install the battery hold down/fan control module bracket.

Tighten
Tighten the battery hold down bracket to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

Notice: Battery life is reduced if a battery insulation cover is not used.

Install the battery insulating cover.
Install the fan control module by sliding it down onto the bracket.
Connect the positive battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).
