You are the third person I know that has a Mercury Sable that just won't start. My father and a friend of mine are both having problems with their Mercury Sable. The car only starts when it wants to. When trying to start you can hear the fuel pump. They checked the starter, no problem. It's not overheating. Every time my fathers neighbor (who is a mechanic) comes to look at the car it, the car will start. He said he can't check it out unless it doesn't start.

Sounds like the TFI module on the distributor, in both cases. This troublesome part has not been one of Ford's better ideas. :grinno:

I had an '89 Sable Wagon with the same problem and never get it start again. Two mechanics came over to my house and couldn't fix it either. We did try the distributor, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, etc... I finally had it towed to the junk yard after nearly a year of working on the car. I tried the dealerships in my area and was told there was nothing they could do about it. They didn't know how to fix it either. I haven't bought another Ford product since.

Even the stealerships didn't want to take a run at it?!

I've got an '87 Taurus wagon, and have learned a LOT about these cars.

They ain't THAT tough to fix... It's a simple electrical problem.

The 2 mechanics who came over were from the Ford dealership. When I pulled the car to another dealer he said he couldn't figure it out either. The tried various electrical components and even ran the lines back with no luck. All it would do is turn over but never start. We put a lot of hours working on that beast over the course of the year and just finally threw in the towel. I've been working on cars for over 20yrs. and have never failed at getting them running until this one.

Make sure the wires leaving the battery are plug in and that the fuseable liinks if any are not burned out (use an ohm meter).

Had this problem with my wife's car. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Starter turned the engine over just fine. Had spark at the plugs. Even had fuel in the rail. Just not enough pressure (30-40 pounds!). Replaced the pump (in tank of course) and runs fine.

Just Curious!?
If it's a "simple" electrical problem? And you are an expert!? Why didn't you give the person something "specific" to go on!?

By declaring "They ain't THAT tough to fix... It's a simple electrical problem." is just a wee bit inspecific, isn't it?

But to your credit, you've narrowed it down to about 50% of the total possible aspects of the makeup of any vehicle.
