Hi guys: lot of time since I do something in that section: happy to be here :)
Well this would be a kind of exercise: I'm trying a whole different workflow: I put apart our pricey hobby stuff to try something new: pro industrial stuff like acrylics primers, flat base and 2 part clearcoat, so don't expect miracles from me, as you'll know shortly I found out some troubles but also a lot of fun and.. at least I know something new.
So far the subject: nothing special to me: I discover it in a LHS and I token it for the price and due to the awesome livery, by and by I become to love it and discover the hystory of this little beast driven by the "Little Prince of Speed" Didier Pironi: I ever loved him albeit my preferred at that time was Jacques (and obviously Nelson: who haven't loved Piquet?). This car beated awesome Porsche 936 and won the 1978 LM.
Well I won't to bore someone so quicly to the built:
This model is like a motorized car, so lack of inside details, also is a bit like a snap-mount in few points: I tried to remove those "toy" appeal point: I had close those block-holes with styrene and putty.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/fcac3d23.jpg
I also deepened air-intakes by cutting edges and creating some styrene walls, and drilled holes in the door
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/7a8aa8f1.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/2bceb628.jpg
Front air-scoop was closed and really thick: I cut out all and redo with styrene strips, than I done the front scoop cover, like in the real car
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/04040a51.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/e1292a91.jpg
A bit of thinned putty and those was decent to me
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/97e80e04.jpg
I tought a bit before a decision on the rear intakes: than I done the same than for the front scoop:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/fa197250.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/a6f25d3d.jpg
Was really hard do a decent putty job on the snorkel base: really close room to sand out putty, I used also on here thinned putty to minimize sanding, in light layers
I also removed fuel caps to redone some alu turned stuff and.. disaster in the left side the mill machine (I used it with the body free in the 2-axis table) do its sign on my body shell: another putty job just over panel lines!
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/31d82dc4.jpg
Headlight have a internal surface to fix plexiglass cover so I done it by styrene: before I drawn the evenlop like when you do a CF job
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/19d6f30d.jpg
I redone panel lines withe the help of a "DYMO" tape, the back of the cutter, and a scriber.

Quickly to the new products: basically one reason is i'm bored to spend 30-40 eur every car in Tamiya cans, also I'ld try something better (or supposed better) :)
So after sanded all the body shell I used as primer and sealer (next step hot paints) an acrylic grey base from Lecher, after that I used a white acrilic to lighten the tone before spray the yellow. I found out those quetly hard to flush out from the airbrush (Iwata HPCS, 0.3 diam.) but the finish is superb and this kind of color is a bit "progressive" and hard compared to Tamy stuff to me, not easy so sand down until the plastic :)
I done this job in 4 or 5 step, every layer wetsanded
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/af850642.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/a2cab259.jpg
Cyan circle just to note that I sand down the front splitter to a better "real " appeal :)
So was the time for the yellow flat base: it's a mixed "Ferrari Giallo Modena" from Lecher, I found out this and teh PPG "rosso scuderia" really awesome: almost the best thing I flush over my AB, I done the job in just 2 steps, wetsanding after each layer
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/98ca73d0.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/0235a5de.jpg
This flat base is really quick to cure: the day after spraying I start the decal's job: I had to use a lot of 'set and 'sol to put down those giant decals! Lettering are joined with coloured areas so.. no chance for a 2 tone sprayed livery.
I had my first trouble with the first clearcoat: may be I had some few sol and set particles and the clear react with, the surface was realli like an emmenthan chhes :) with some friends help (Thanks guys ) I fix the problem cleaning with alchol the surface before spraying. So I sanded down, destroyed some few decal, touch up, and finally a couple of wetcoats w/out big difficoulties: that's the result, soon with polishing and few interior details and.. Didier figure :)

Nice work, Gio! Looks teriffic. I've been wondering when you'd start this one. Your detailing touches to the air vents add alot. Another cool esoteric build to follow!

Hi
Impressive job on that old Tamiya kit. Enough to make me start my own one!
Strictly speaking there is a slight problem with the spotless finish though. The black areas are not gloss black on the real car, but a semigloss black, almost like a anti glare panel on a fighter. Problem is that the semigloss are confined to the black areas which means one hell of a masking job... Naturally I can back this up with pictures.
But still a magnificent job.
Best regards
Flemming

I noticed: the only way I found out so far is to mask backs (in) after the gloss finishing and spray a light hand of matt/satin, I'll try: if you have refs're well welcome, I found out few. Thanks.
Is this one of the older Tamiya kits? Yes
You NEED to polish it?!?!? The shine looks excelent to me......
Maybe not after last hand: I've a couple of little flaws actually and I need to resand for a last topcoat :)
Once again thanks a lot guys :)

Hi
Look at this. This picture is of the longer no. 1 car - but the same applies to the semigloss black area. Notice the difuse light that defers from a true gloss area like the yellow and white areas.

Interesting pics there Flemming. In the second one it looks like the far black stripe is glossy!? The brake duct is clearly reflected in it. Different paints/stickers or distance making the black appear glossier? If the latter then maybe a gloss black finish would be approriate for a 1/24th model. :dunno: Ah the joys of scale effect...
Notice the crappy paintwork inside the intake as well.
Can't see any crappy paintwork on your bodywork Giovanni. Superb finish! :)

Thanks Phil and congrats for the deserved trophy: I guess flhansen is right: I hoped for a whyle those car was glossy but the black's reflection is definitevely flat: anyway it's quetly strange: how can a matt or just satin surface do that kind of reflection as Phil said?

I'm happy becouse is the #4 car that achieved the 4th position at '78 LM with the awesome Monsieur Ragnotti (and Frequellin obv.)
so... it's my first "very mine" twosome LOL.
Ok let me show something:
This is the kit's interiors: it's one of those motorized stuff, since the Ragnotti's car (that needs some little conversion since is an A442, not a 442B, I'll show in next steps) was used without "blob roof", you'll see some of the... nothing.. the kit offer:

I'm happy becouse is the #4 car that achieved the 4th position at '78 LM with the awesome Monsieur Ragnotti (and Frequellin obv.)
so... it's my first "very mine" twosome LOL.
Ok let me show something:
This is the kit's interiors: it's one of those motorized stuff, since the Ragnotti's car (that needs some little conversion since is an A442, not a 442B, I'll show in next steps) was used without "blob roof", you'll see some of the... nothing.. the kit offer:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5457.jpg
I started cleaning all parts that will interfere with a pool:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5446.jpg
A couple shots of the real car:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/a442b_goodwood99_cockpit3.jpg
I drawn the panels on illustrator, I done also marks for etch the rivets, than I cut out parts and punched rivets:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5445.jpg
The result: sigh, I need another now....
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5455.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5456.jpg
I had to manage some adjustments to fit the body:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5451.jpg
But the result is that:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5461.jpg
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5460.jpg

Stay tuned!

Update:
Kit's wheels are terrible: I stripped from the chrome/clear but then I decided to do my own machined rims, with photoetched spokes. It's the first time I do machined rims, turned from both sides, before I done just lips.
Front and back rims, inside and outside:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5776.jpg
I done also self-ventilated PE discs but since it's a very curbside project (only wall visible) I choose machined discs, better to me:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5777.jpg
This is also the first time I try to etch something thicker than 0.1mm: this is the result with a 0.3 mm plate: I have to improove my PE skills with thick materials but it's just a begin:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5779.jpg
Bolts cutted from a hex pipe:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5780.jpg
Turned "srew" part (the roundel shoul be part of the bolt, I'll seam or glue later)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5782.jpg
And here with the clips: the "screw" was drilled, clips done with a thin copper pipe:
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/CIMG5781.jpg
I done myself also a tool to machine a bit also tyres (rim's waste):

Wheels and screws look fantastic.
Just one question: the part, where the copper clip sits, looks rather long from where the "screw" ends.
I have no reference, is that ok or will it be shortened?

Ye Micha I agree, the screw is too long: hard to recognize in motion from refs but it seems that the "screw" isn't longer than the bolt: I needed a bit of pipe left to drill the pin's hole, I guess I'll shorten of 0.5-0.7mm or cut it just near the bolt. I'l mostly noticeable in the fron rim that isn't so deep.

Not Sean, didn't answered yet :D But I guess there isn't yet an answer LOL
You know: sometimes we start something without a precise plan: I started this french girl more than a year ago as a (really!!!) OOB project to learn something about automotive's base coats and 2K clears: on the way I found and fix problems, learn how to use 2Ks, and started to love this car, lately I found another cheap one and the amazing Ragnotti's decals (shame he didn't driven a M3 or a 911 cos he didn't driven stight also front traction cars LOL) so I decided to do also the second: that would be a bit more OOB than the other one LOL.
@Andy: it's not alloy, it's hex brass rod: don't know the manufacturer, I buy it evey year at Milan's model show. 1-4 mm "diam".

By the way, is there a good book for learning to use a lathe? (it can be in english or in french....Thank you)

I need an advice guys: I discovered some modifications in the Raghotti's 442 after the decal job.... TBH I started the second car as a OOB to show the mods done in the first one... but just now I discovered (from the S24 decal's sheet) some mofifications. Let me show:
(The UMI-S27 sheet was a pain in.... the red parts are matt, thick and rigid as a cartboard, but very fragile, the black areas are thin and a pleasure to work with, the white decals are in the average.... I know UMI sets are very different but here I have 3 qualities in a sheet... well I done it at last, some touch up needed and I'll clearcoat and than play with matt on black areas)
Yellow is a kind Renault 358 Jaune competition mixed by Zeropaints: fantastic like ever the service and the product.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/alpine%20renaut%20a442b/lemans-1978-24h-ph-0142.jpg
you'll see a different cut of the body in the pilot's area (over the pilots names) , a couple of naca intakes near the big calberson logo in the side, and the superior intake in the engine's hood is replaced by a naca....
The only modification I noticed before are the dressed mirrors and in the spoiler mount's design...
Someone would help with a discussion about? I guess isn't impossible but hard do something now.... sh## I hate compromises!!!!
