Hello Gio

Wikipedia has an article on these cars:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_Alpine_A442

The number 1 and 2 cars had bubble canopies (and holes cut in the doors to give the drivers more air!). Number 1 was also lengthened in the rear section. Numbers 3 and 4 were the older 1977 spec cars, and that's why the cockpit surround also looked different to the #1 and #2 cars.
The Tamiiya kit needs mods (depending on which car you're building) in these areas:
#1 - lengthen body, air vents on front wheel arches, holes in doors, front air dam lengthen.
#2 - air vents on front wheel arches, holes in doors, front air dam lengthen.
#3 - air vents on front wheel arches, no holes in doors, front air dam lengthen, modify rear wing struts, change cockpit surround.
#4 - air vents on front wheel arches, no holes in doors, front air dam lengthen, modify rear wing struts, change cockpit surround.
Oh, and the appropriate paint and decal schemes.
Regards
Graham

Hi

Back in 1980 (I think) there was a very great article in Scale Models International (UK based) that told you how to convert the car into the 1977 version (no.4 Calberson) Rather funny to read after all those years. All lettering were done with Letraset dry transfer sheets. NACA vents were copied from another kit with a suitable vent and 'transferred' to the kit. Rather fancy stuff at that time.

Don't look at the current Scale Models International that has degenerated into an unpleasent mix of diecasts and less than good modelling. What a waste I'm afraid.

Best regards

Flemming

Thanks guys. The point is that I applyed already those decals. On the other hand I done some mods (vents on wheel archs, swing struts) where decals was applied. I think I could do something but should be really a work of clean surgery, working really near decals or color's edges. best way may be do the work after a clearcoat, to protect decals. I'm not 100% decided but the car should be cool then.

Anyone know if there's in the market a 1/24 RE20 or RE30 with the V6turbo to steal? Since I need to do mess in the rear cowl may be I'll...... ;)

Hey Gio, I think you should just move on with this great build, unless of course this is the only model you have to build?

I agree also wit your viewpoint, Mike: I like this car and it helped me to improove some skills but it isn't in the list of my top subject.... I'll think about a bit before swtich on my dremel for surgery.... Thanks a lot for the thought.

Following hopefully you'll agree with me if I wait until now to do aplly matt over black areas... :

I'm lucky my little 1/24 modeler, my son Nino, helped me, so with 4 hands (2 huge and 2 perfect to do superb 1/43.... ) we done all the mask job in less than 1h..

I bought 1Kg. of 2K matt clear for this and other projects.... noo too shitty weather today to mix 2K stuff: i used a (superb) Vallejo air Satin clear. I guess it need a bit of some kind of thinner, but I used straigh from the jar. I'm amazed woth the contrast between glossy yellow/white and matt black on back's trims: I'm yet looking it after an hour LOL.

I'm wondering to start my R43 1/24 Pirelli Stratos just to re use matt black over glossy colors LOL

Great masking job Gio. Don't know how you guys do it, I've tried to mask over decals (with clear on top) and the tape always pulls up the decals. I've tried several masking tapes and always the same result.

Keep up the good work Gio, looking forward to seeing it done.

Thanks a lot guys.

@Mike: I never had this kind of problems: also masking to do black window trims, and with several kind of clearcoats (mainly TS13, but I guess if you're able to strip TS13 with tape you keep also primer and some thick of styrene LOL), I got other problems in past like clear texturing also aftere a "reasonnable" curing time.

Anyway: this clear is strong: 2K Lechler macrofan, Hi solid, I guess it's the lechler Hi end product speaking of clearcoats. And tapes are 3M masking tapes, press sensitive, the narrowed grey one is a bit thicker and conformable (soft), the yellow kind, ever press sensitive, used to fill areas ;)

Also all my decals like to deink litres of Sol (LOL) and I try to have ever a mirror surface (wel I try at last LOL) from primer to undercoats, to avoid silvering and decals stripping, but I know you work in the same way...

Thanks a lot guys! you all are tooooo much gentle.

Looks like this poor kerbside car would be ever my "workshop in a model": 1st attempt with 2K clear, 1st alloy rims, PE.... LOL I done some few others experiments: I need to do some practis with those axle shaft joint all classic ferraris has, I noticed that also the Alpine's steering weel shaft has one (and the kit's one is terrible), so... why not? Sorry for pict's quality, not easy shot bits.

The real stuff: notice the mentioned joint, the glass top's pivot and the mess behing the thiny dashboard.

The way those pivot works:

and my PE attempt (may be worth not to play so much..)

(Yep calberson is my practice car... LOL)

Finally I removed all the printed detail and redone the wiring job behind the cockpit ;)

Great job!!

You know Heller made a Renault RE30 F1 car in 1/24 that has the same motor as the A442.Its very hard to find but nice(full chassis detail kit).It does need work to make really nice or you can steal parts. The gearbox is a bit simple.

Same Scale Designs of the Tipo33/3 I got in my stash? (and hopefully I would do a day...) Great project, superb PE.

BTW: thanks for the info: I didn't known: I asked in advance if there a 1/24 RE20 or 30 but no answers: now I'll try to find one: I need to re-arrange the Calberson 442, so if I find a good source for the Gordini I'll for sure cut out the engine hood.

Yes,same Scale Designs.I will reissue the 1971 T33/3 and a Sebring headlight
version along with the Dino 166P again soon. The Heller kit is the 1982 RE30.
It does say its a snap tight but trust me,its better than all of the Revell
Germany stuff including the Ferrari 2003GA(the best F1 kit I think they have made so far). The Heller has full chassis detail.

@Tom: I found nothing about those kit.... shame.

Some updates: games are almost done and next one may be the last. I machined some bits included tyres valves (yep I know and got some sakatsu stuff, but just for fun and to learn how to turn safe those thiny bits..) and headlights (that are molded in a horrible chrome plastic from mummy Tamy), some more experiment & fun so..

Before all I finished the dashboard:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6176.jpg

Gauges are done by a decal I printed using a real shot, than I filled them with a drop of 2K clear, unthinned; it's an hi-solid kind and it work! They're glossy over the matte background. I added Sakatsu switches and adv printed paper labels:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6178.jpg

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6180.jpg

I completed also the rims, front are bare metal (polished) and back are black, drybrushed and washed with oils (and zippo fluid)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6168.jpg

I redone also nuts since they're too long, better now:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6165.jpg

Valves:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6174.jpg

The machined reflectors:

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6183.jpg

And the whole headlight assembly: alu turned reflector, acryl turned light bulb (diam. 0.90 mm) than polished a bit, warmcasted lens over an alloy mold. I felt fun guys.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6186.jpg

Few stuff yet. I'm horrible busy and I'm enjoying the few minutes I steal from job.

Sorry for what happened yesterday in shouth USA, hopefully you guys would be all safe.

I love the head lights with those vac formed covers....but did you want that facetted look on the reflectors? I'd sand and polish them...

Thanks guys: few stuff yet. Interiors are now finished with turned estinguishers, boards, few cables, belts (I didn't got exact info about original car belts: some car own now blue, some sabelt and some black belts: since this car was very narrow developed from the R30 F1 racer I decided to use same belts, so, blue!). Notice also that the car has now his wing, and the stuff on the front fender: I replicated the panel early with a plastic panel and now with a decals with profile and bolts dot, I added also the tape strips that blind the first 3 vents on the fron fenders, fuel cap added too (turned alu).

I guess I'll play with some weathering toy soon...

I'm playing with bulb roof hinges but the thing is very hard, I got a spare car to do all attempts but the risk is ever those to screw all up... I'll see if use hinges and opened bulb of just fix a intonse bulb and launch all the stuff under glass qqqqqqquicckkk!!!

Dunno know if i should do you a favour :D I spent my last cash on some stuff that start by M and finish with hiro LOL, the camera is quite good, may be the man...

last (but this time very last) details

antenna: sakatsu base and guitar wire

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6211.jpg

mirrors: I realized Renault use some of its spare stuff: mirrors are (almost) like the R5 Group B: I used our Scuderia's R5 PE mirrors: they do the work after a couple of polishing passes!

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6206.jpg

..... after all those efforts I forgot to mount casted lens..... no way I unmount all... PE fasteners are ever from the R5 PE sheet (windshield fasteners on the R5)

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6205.jpg

Body fasteners: the triangular base is custom etched, the pin and the ring is from CM

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c159/gionc/A442b/CIMG6201.jpg

And last one: I decided to glue the bulb and use the hinges : I spent a couple days (obviously of modelling times...LOL) to find a way to open it: too complex andd too delicate the parts. PE hinges + turned pins.

Absolutely stunning work. All the parts you've turned and also the selfmade PE. Specialy working with a lathe makes me a bit jealous. I was bidding for one on Ebay, but the biddings kept comming so I bailed out. Maybe next time. How do you make you're artwork for the PE. Do you use the drawingprogram on the computer or you do this by hand?

Again the result is fantastic.

@ewestra: ages ago I done a quick guide > http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=697796

from the keyboard to the PE.... BTW I use illustrator: I guess it is possible to do the job by hand, doing the artwork bigger (ex. the double) and decreasing it with a photocopyer, I guess 30 YA I would follow this way... luckily I have my fingers on a mac's keyboard by the 1988... the result is that I forgot to handwrite... I feel hard to do my sign also LOL!!!!!
