How many clunks when you shift?

I've got a 98 3.8 and no codes which otherwise runs okay for 8 years old and 125,000 miles, but I've noticed 3 distinct clunks when the transmission shifts to overdrive under moderate accelleration. How many clunks (if any) do the rest of you get when overdrive kicks in?

I have a 98 GL 3.8 as well...and my shift to overdrive is about the smoothest part of the ride...i would think there is something wrong.
Good luck though, post a reply if you are able to figure out the problem.

Hello

Like the first reply to your post.....you shouldn't have any noise on OD engagement. Do you have any noise on going from D to R? If you do it might be motor mounts you're hearing.

Regards

Dan

Just a followup. A Mercon bath and filter change took care of the clunking. The magnet in the pan looked about like you'd expect after 125K miles. Maybe 1/8 inch of particles stuck to it. All the shifts are much smoother now. It was overdue, since it'd been about 60K miles since the last fluid change.

well good to hear that's all it was....could have been alot more expensive.
