98 Transmision problem code 1744

The van is shifting hard between 1st and 2nd but other wise seems to run pretty good. I got the check engine light on and the code I read was 1744.
The van has 230k on it and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money on an unnecessary tranny replacement if I don’t have to. Any help on what I can do to fix or prolong the life of the van would be appreciated.

Hi, Please get me the build date of the vehicle and the engine size?, 3.0 or 3.8, Also trans info, AX4S or AX4N,?, I have ford TSB's, and I am willing to look them up if you respond with the info, Look on the door tag for the build date, The trans info is on the trans, White tag on top of the bell houseing, The engine info is on a decal on the hood undeside...See Ya, Clay....
