My car was broken into this weekend and someone tried to steal it. They did not succeed. However, there was extensive damage done to the ignition lock cylinder. After consulting the "Haynes" manual on how to remove the tumbler assembly, I am stuck. The pictures in the manual are not of the mechanism I have on my 2000 sl1. I need to know how to remove the cyliner/tumbler assembly to replace it. What I am missing is the release mechanisms location. The damage is pretty bad, but I am able to use the key to turn the vehicle to the ACC location. And with the help of some pliers have been able to start and move the vehicle. Any help would be great! thanks.

I just removed an ignition cylinder, haynes didnt help. Once you have the covers off and you can see the igniton cylinders housing there will be a small hole on the right side of the housing. use a coathanger and push inside 1-2 inches to unlatch the cylinder. you may have to bend the coat hanger a little to get it to depress the lock all the way and the key has to be in ACC for it to slide out.

Take the housing off. Put the cylinder in the ACC position. There is a hole on the side of the cylinder where you put the end of a coat hanger through. Press and get a feel for the latch. You need to press this latch it. (think of it as a tab) You must press the tab in and pull the cylinder out. A little jiggle and some patience and youll get it done. I just did it today :)
