I couldn't quickly find error code listings for a '96 airbag system - anyone know where to find them?
That said, the most common cause of airbag problems that I've seen is a bad clockspring. The clockspring is the set of connections within your steering column that allows the airbag to be electrically connected to the rest of the van, even though the steering wheel turns. Over time, the connections can become intermittent. The airbag processor detects this, and activates the error light.
As noted, the connections may be intermittent - so the error light may not come on all the time.
If you're an experienced DIYer, replacing the clockspring isn't likely a terribly difficult job.
Note that there are some IMPORTANT safety procedures that MUST be followed when working on airbag systems.
