1997 Parts ID?

I have a 97 Sable LS with the Duratec V6. Looking into the engine bay there is a black box that sits right on top behind the radiator but in front of the engine. I was told it is a computer for the butterflies. I am trying to verify that, the box is chattering on me so I need to replace it. Also my check engine light is on because of it, if I unplug the box the light goes off but my milage goes down.

Did you have the codes read? Autozone will do it for free. The box maybe only the messenger and is not causing the CEL to come on. Let us know what the actual codes are.

I did have the codes read, I forgot what the exact code was, but they said it was the IAC Valve, so I replaced that and did not take care of the check engine problem. I do want to replace that box anyways as it clicks and chatters quite loudly.

The IMRC controller does sit in that area, actually right on the front valve cover, but the GEM module is in the ballpark too. Pull it off and get me an engineering number and I'll cross it for you. MM.
