i'm not saying it's unreasonable, $30k sounds like a *sweet* deal for a 280hp AWD car to me. But i'm not going to spend that much, so i'd more like to see a 230ish-hp version in the same price range as the WRX, and then tune it back up as mod money permits. $30k+ is in WRX STI ground, they should have an Evo Extreme or something to compete in that range, i don't think they should try to put themselves above competing with the WRX. And face it, fans here notwithstanding, in the general population, how many people with $35k+ to spend on a car are gonna spend it on a "Subaru" or a "Mitsubishi"? You're talking entry level BMW and MB there and that's what most people spending that money want.
Not to mention, i'd be frightened to see my insurance bill when it comes through on a car nudging 300hp. We'll see what happens. If it's not coming out until '03, Mitsubishi is gonna miss my sale until at least '06 anyway, so i guess i'll stop bishin'.

Ok...I'll chime in with what I have read. I don't know how reliable the sources are, but onewas a news story that came from Mitsubishi of America. It said the EVO will be coming for the 2003 model year. The HP rating was slightly detuned to about 250hp., but the torque numbers were at about 280ft/lbs. It should be pretty easy to get this car back to the 280hp mark with minimal modifications. I don't understand why they are forced to detune cars like that. The '03 Mustang Cobra is going to run 390hp, so why such the problem with a measly 280?

i love it,
Mustang6, the only guy in here that up front says he may be wrong and that his sources may not be credible has the best info. check out this link:

and mustang6, the reason they have to detune it is the need to meet crash test standards (smaller intercooler) and for emissions. a highly wound 4-cyl with a turbo has quite a bit of trouble meeting california emissions. here's part of the reason why,
SVT Cobra: 4.6 liters engine- 320 HP- only 70 HP per liter
Evo VII: 2.0 liter engine- 276 HP - that's 138 HP per liter!!!
the added efficiency means more noxious emissions.

Thanks moldy. I am new here, and I didn't want to step on anyone's toes, so I decided to make it very clear that may not know what I am talking about. As you can probably tell from my name, I am a Mustang owner right now (*ducking down to shield myself*), but I plan on getting either a Lancer EVO, or a Subaru WRX in the next couple of years, so I want to learn all I can about these cars. Thanks.

you've all heard about the evo VIII by now, 271 ponies, under 30k, but the interesting thing is...evo VII's are still 35 ks
