Yummmmy! Yummmmy! its carbon heaven...
best application of carbon decals that ive ever seen.

Thanks again guys.

Steve - the carbon fibre decal is from F1 Specialties, my favourite CF. I've used the 1/12 scale, which is way too large strictly speaking, but I like it to be noticeable. Their 1/20th is true to scale and so fine it's hard to see.

Giovanni - yes I sprayed through Tamiya mesh on the small mufflers. The foil on the pipes is from an Easter chocolate. :)

you never cease to amaze us. how do you prep the piece before laying the decal? my decals never look that smooth.

Thanks again. Cozmo, what makes the carbon fibre decal look smooth is the four or five coats of clear on top, sanded and polished.

Here is another pic where you can actually see the exhaust:

Wow, that looks sooo great!
As my model arrived today I really am looking forward to build that.
I plan to open the front hood (bonnet?) so that you can store the roof in there as in the 1:12 car, which is a little bit out of range for my money ;)

Thanks again. Cozmo, what makes the carbon fibre decal look smooth is the four or five coats of clear on top, sanded and polished.
What Clear did you use for that? 'cause it really makes it look good.

RallyRaider

Over the chassis carbon fibre I used Modellers B-04 Super Clear, the bottle variety. First time I've used it and it's excellent! :)

Finished polishing the body although it still needs a wax. Black is both great and frustrating to work with. Great because the shine is just like a mirror, frustrating because it shows every scratch, piece of dust and fingerprint!

Anyway the first shot is a self portrait of sorts, then my son wandered along! :)

There's someone's face spoiling the finish in the first picture, you think you'll be able to rub that imperfection out? ;)

You're certainly right about black, very frustrating, but also very satisfying if you manage to get it right. And you certainly have.

Wow you could hang that from the wall and use as a mirror. Awesome job.

How a family portrait! Yes just a mirror shine.

I found out some helps, lately, with an autmotive wax, the kind that you spread on and after few minutes become to be a solid white crap, after that you polish it and... miracle the white crap come to glossy transparent and the microscratch're filled. I cover it with a Tamy wax: I noticed that the glossy effect isn't constant in the time and the shine tend to decrease after few monts, better with last pass of Tamy.

BTW I'm ever still waiting for a definitive anti-static solution: my waxed stuff got dust also in a sealed box: mystere.

You forgot to smile for that last picture..!! What a great shine, black really does give a great shine if polished correctly.. Bit like this one actaully..

That's got to be the ultimate black paint job.

We always ask (as in this thread) about the clear used but I am more and more convinced it has less to do with the materials used and more to do with the skill and patience applied - I am sure that was the case here.

All the FAQs and all the Tutorials and all the threads in all the world just won't replace apporoching the task with care, patience and an uncompromising approach - I jealously raise my hat to you, Phil :worshippy

Total respect Phil. Stunning. Black is probably the hardest to get just right - I haven't a black car in my collection yet for this reason. Brillaint. This should look superb when finished.

I hate black as much as I hate white, take some getting right, but your certainly have it sorted 10/10 :bigthumb:

05-25-2006, 08:40 PM
Thanks very much again everybody. I'm worried too much handling is going to mess up that shine. :)

auw12 - the clear coat is Tamiya TS-13 straight from the can. It's nice to use it without having to worry about wrinkling decals for a change. :) Then I used Tamiya polishing compound, Hasegawa ceramic compound, Hasegawa polymer coat, carnuba wax and finished with Tamiya wax. The Hasegawa system is the secret to such a good shine I think.

A small update, here is the rear spring and shock assembly. I forgot to take pics of the seperate parts before I put it together. I'm still debating whether I should add further details. :dunno: There is also some minor plumbing on the engine but it's hard to see.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a315/RallyRaider/Carrera-GT/Dscf6360.jpg

I've only got a couple of weeks left to finish this off if I'm to take it to the Melbourne Model Expo.

the polymer coat sounds interesting.
can you tell more about it?
recently, i've been using some autoglym resin polish on my models and that seems to be doing amazing things to some even not so good polishing jobs.
is this polymer coat something similar?

RallyRaider
05-26-2006, 01:25 AM
I wish I could tell you more about it monkey, but the instructions are in Japanese! I just use it like any other compound and wax sealer. I bought them from Rainbow 10 a while back after reading good things about it by hirofkd. If you've seen Hiro's paint finishes you'll know it must work! I recall it was quite expensive but you only need to use the tiniest amount, so a bottle of each will last years (more like decades at my build rate).

I just can't help staring at that picture

Are the springs hand wound and out on the kit dampers or are they aftermarket parts?

A few quick pics of the almost complete chassis/interior mocked up. Not far to go now. The fit on this kit is so good many parts amost a snap together.

Outstanding!

I repeat my question about the springs/dampers.

RallyRaider
06-05-2006, 05:27 AM
Sorry Steve, I missed your question earlier. I used small springs cut to size. Then used plastic card, metal rod and brass tube to rebuild and strengthen the damper. I should have taken photos of all the pieces to make it clearer.

Phil,
Where do you get the Galtran nuts & bolts?
Their website at www.galtran.com, click on the scale nuts and bolts link. Shipping is cheap to Australia too, something like 3 US dollars last time I ordered.
