The book on the 3,8 says to rotate cam lobes away from rocker when tightening them or serious damage to engine may occur. could this be a problem even if the cam and crank are in proper alighnment? I failed to read this before I tighten them.

I think the hazard is possibly leaving a rocker mount "high" (i.e., an air gap underneath) and having the oil passage open ... therefore not getting lube directed to where it needs to go.
I think if you redid that portion of the reassembly, this time rotating the cam as you go ... you should be just fine.
