Traction Control not working & ABS light on

Hello all, I am new to the board and I am glad I found it.
Here is a small intro, my name is Rob and I am the new owner of an '02 Impala LS (loaded to the nuts including Sports Appearance Pkg:) ), it has 90km (I am in Canada, so approx 55mi for you 'mericans:grinyes: ).
Well, I just picked it up from the dealer yesterday and everything went well on the hour drive home. Later that night I go to pull it in the driveway and I see the "Traction Control Service" alert come on, and the "Trac off" and ABS lights stay on. I assume that since there is a problem detected in the TC system that it shuts it down automatically (and not allowing me to turn it on)?
My question is this:
Is there a possibility that the codes for the TC were tripped when the car was put the the Emissions Test (E-test)? As the garages have to put the front tires onto the rollers, would the system confuse that for "spin" and trigger an alert in the system?? I am not sure if this is a possible explanation, but it just seems to me that it may be.
Also, would/could the ABS light be directly linked to this??
A little background - Last night the lights/messages came on etc. This morning, they didnt come on at all on my way to work (45 min drive or so). But at lunch they came on again. In the ride in this morning (while the TC was working) I was able to shut it off and on, but when the service code is tripped I am unable to turn the system on.
Everytime the TC has failed the ABS light has stayed on, but when the TC was working the ABS light was off (leading me to believe that the problem is related).
If its not likely to be the e-test as the culprit, please provide any ideas as to what you might think the problem is?
Wheel bearing??
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Needs to be scanned for abs codes to diagnose this problem. Welcome to AF, if you do not get expected responses here, since the drive train is the same as a Lumina you could post there, seems somewaht more active. Plenty of qualified people on AF.

I think there is a thing with w-bodies where a wire can become loose at a wheel speed sensor. This would throw both a traction control and abs code, as neither are able to work w/o the sensor. Search the forum for more, because I know i've seen it elsewhere. Check all wbody ones (grand prix, lumina, regal, century, intrigue...)

have had multiple posts about this, everytime it was the wheel speed sensor. It CANNOT be replaced by itself, it is built into the hub itself. only problem is, you have 4 hubs and no idea of which one is created your problem. I believe the only way to find out which hub it is, is to connect a techII to the car. Which unless you have a shop around you with one, the dealership is the place to go.

Thanks for the responses.
Quick update - It hasnt come on since lunchtime yesterday and I have been doing everything I can to piss it off, lol.
Taking off trying to get it to spin/engage TC (which it did and worked fine), turning it on/off etc but no sign of it.
Doesnt even flash the code in the message center when I shut the car off (which it was showing when I shut it down as of yesterday).
I wanted to clear the codes and start fresh to see if it was something that was tripped when it was put thru the e-test, but didnt want to pull the battery cable (I do believe that would screw up my factory CD if I was to do so).
Does the CPU purge the codes on these periodically?? If not then I would think the code would still be active and alerting me??
If not, how would I go about purging the existing codes??
Thanks again in advance.

Most likely you have a bad wheel speed sensor or harness connection to the wheel speed sensor. You will need an ABS capable scanner to determine which wheel. It is possible that on a 2 wheel dyno, the front wheels spinning and the rear wheels stationary caused the light to trip, but unlikely. Since it has continued to come on/off intermittently, I'd suspect a wheel speed sensor/harness is bad, especially if you live in a pothole infested area. Moisture intrusion is the other killer of ABS sensor equipped hub bearings.

disconnecting your battery will NOT screw up your radio, most you'll have to do is reset your radio settings and all the features.
As far as clearing the codes, if the SES light isnt on, there arent any, but you can jsut go to autozone or checker and have them clear the DTC when your SES light is on.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My wife called me this morning in a somewhat panic saying that halfway to town the service traction soon light came on, traction turned off, and ABS light came on. They went back out, then later came back on for a few seconds. Only did it twice.
I've looked at the other threads concerning this and have a couple questions of my own.
1. Has anyone ever solved the problem without having to replace the sensor/hub? or am I looking at having to replace a hub or two.
2. Can an OBD scanner tell me which hub set the light or is that a Tech2 thing only.
I'm going to jack the car up this weekend, pull all the tires, make sure all plugs/wires are connected, and hose off any road grime. Crossing my fingers that's all it takes.
If it wasn't for all the lights and chimes that go off when it happened I'd probably not worry about it too much. However I don't want my wife to have to put up with it for too long (she drives it 110 miles/day).

My 01 Ls has been doing it for a while now.It has been getting progresivly worse. It is to the p[oint now where the warning lites stay on. I am going to try to see if i can find out which hub it is without bringing it to the dealer.

1: No; pretty much you're going to have to repllace a hub or two.
2: I think the only way to find out definitively is with a Tech2, but I could be wrong.

Ok, now this also just started to happen to my car recently. I happend today while I was sitting in the car for about a half hour eating lunch. It also happend one time last week.
The Chime goes off and I see the service traction soon light, that goes off and I see the ABS light is on.
I turn off the car off and turn it back on... then a few seconds later I see the security light is on.
Can anybody point me in the direction to be looking for a problem so i can fix it before I get stuck somewhere.

I don't believe you will be stuck anywhere. It's just a wheel sensor not working right. At worst you don't have traction control and possibly ABS (?) The car will still drive.......i think

You wont get stuck somewhere. It will get progressivly worse happening 2 or 3 times a day and then finally everytime you start the car

I hope you all are right, i hate getting stuck out in the middle of no where and all. I do hope its just a wheel sensor but I am pulling up 2 wierd codes on my scanner that make me think something else may be wrong.
They are P1626 Theft deterrent..... lost class 2 communications with the BCM and U1064 PZM Serial Data Fault.. loss of BCM/DIM/SBM communications.
I will write down exactly what the codes say.... but from what i can remember that is what the codes read as.
I hope I'm not looking at a BCM problem on top of my transmission problem.

Disable TC by pulling the fuse.
TC progessively turns off injectors while braking. Turning off injectors while at high RPM is not good. This is a GM screwup.
Several owners of Supercharged vehicles have popped pistons due to uncontrolled and overly hot combustion when the injector is shut down. It would have been much safer if GM had chosen to cut the airflow to the MAF and air starve it.
