#1 and 2 banks lean??

2000 Windstar.. 80k on it and it just started showing the check engine light. I ran a code on it and come up with 2 codes...

P0171 and P0174

Number 1 bank and number 2 bank too lean.. I got this far.. however I am not sure what will cause this? I was thinking maybe some bad injectors not injecting enough fuel?

Any ideas on this?

Run a search in this forum for P0171 and P0174. You have probably joined the "isolator bolt fix" club.

I was having the same codes on my 2000 Windstar and was gearing up to perform the famous intake manifold bolt seal/valve cover upgrade that seems to be a common solution to this problem. Before ordering the parts, I was looking around the engine compartment and noticed that both linkage arms connecting my intake manifold runners (IMRC) to the actuator were missing. For whatever reason, the nylon bushings holding the linkage in place broke and allowed the linkage to fall off (as in - gone). The computer thought the IRMC was ok because the actuator was operating - it just wasn't connected to anything! The result was that the intake runners, which are designed to allow secondary air valves in the manifold to open around 3000 rpm, were partially open all the time (hence, lean left and right). I bought new nylon bushings from Ford, but had to fabricate new linkage out of 1/8 inch round stock since you can't get them without buying a new lower intake manifold (I peened the ends over to keep them from slipping out of the bushings once I was sure they fit). THE CODES ARE GONE, and have been for over a week, and needless to say, the rig runs much better. Seems like an oddball cause but it's worth checking out on yours.

The "secondary air valves" actually allow a different path for the incoming air but does not change the amount of air that passes the MAF. In other words I don't believe it could cause a lean condition. My guess is that you repaired something such as a loose hose when repairing the IRMC.

It may be that the isolator bolts are in the early stages of failing. Getting the intake runners working properly may have slightly changed the pressure that is "seen" by the upper manifold (supported by the isolator bolt seals).

Those codes stand for unmetered vacuum leak. Once by mistake and unknowingly, i removed my loose pcv valve vacuum hose. I recieved the same codes. So first check all your vacuum hoses for unmetered air and all other possibilities, and then think of that famous isolator bolt intake manifold tsb.

Please post back how you fixed it.

I too am having this problem. Does anyone have a diagram of the vacuum setup?
