i have a 96 saturn sl2 and i keep getting this code. i took it to a transmision shop and they said the performance clutch inside the torque converter is bad.
and cost will be around 800 plus to fix
ok if this is the case. if i go buy a torque converter ($71.85 at auto zone) and pay to have it fix by a guy i know for 200.00. will this actually fix it.
or am i just wasting money. and all it is is some sensor or relay.
this car has always had it for 3 years now. the tranny works great, no slipping or anything. and to pass smog all ive had to do is clear the comp just before i smog it.BUT now for some reason the smog shop detects when you clear the comp and doing this is usless without fixing it.
ive heard this code is popular with 96,97 saturns
so ANY help with this would be appreciated :banghead:

if i remember correctly it is not the clutch itself, but rather a leaking seal on the solenoid that controls the clutch. transmission work i always recommend taking to the dealership. i don't trust tranny shops in the slightest.

what solenoid? the torque converter lock up? the saturn dealer should have a seperate trans tech and know this.

ok i have reread the TSB (96-T-61) and the common causes are a bad TCC actuator(fancy word for solenoid IMHO) or damaged input shaft convertor o-ring seal.
so i mixed two problems into one, regardless, i still highly advise you leave this repair to the trans man at the saturn dealership.
