Buying a 94-96 Impala SS

Hey folks,

I am considering buying a 1994-96 Impala SS and I would like to know what sort of problems, concerns and prices I should be looking for ???

I have not done too much research into them, but I do like them (the LT1 is a big interest for me !!!). Is it a fair assumption that the 1996 SS is better then the 1994? (kinda like the 1984 vs. 1987 Buick Grand Nationals, more options ... less problems)

Anyone have any advise or comments?

One potential weakness on a car with some mileage and age is the OptiSpark distributor. They are sensitive to moisture incursion which can affect both the accuracy and operation of the optical pickup array and the insulation of the distributor cap. Misfires, harder starting, and poor/rough idle can be indications of a failing Opti. Eventually, it will not run. They can be time-consuming to replace, but not difficult. A new cap/rotor set can be had for under $150. A remanufactured Opti unit can be found for under $300. Fortunately, GM was aware of potential problems on these units before the LT1 was installed in any B-bodies, so all Impalas (even the '94s) have a force ventilated Opti which helps to prolong their lives.

Beyond that, the differences are basically cosmetic and trim levels. The '94 model year only totalled 6,300 vehicles, so they are more rare. '94s were available in black only. Subsequent years were also available in green/gray metallic and dark cherry metallic. The '96 was the only year with analog instrumentation (including a tachometer) and a floor shifter for the automatic.
