This is my part of the three way that Klutz_100, Gionc and I are having. (And you thought I was going to say "joint venture"). Be sure to check out their threads, also. We'll update the joint thread (there I said it) too, as we work on other subassemblies.

No, I can't say I really needed to start another full engine Ferrari- but they ganged up on me and made me do it! The Mythos and F40 are both still underway, and sooner or later I'll update them, I promise.

But, as Klutz_100 and Gionc were sooo persuasive- may as well make the best of it, right? :naughty:

Tamiya's 360 Spyder is not so uncommon a build around here as either the Mythos or the F40. I expect it's perhaps second only to the Enzo as the most seen Ferrari on AF. This is in part due to the fact that it's a lovely kit, one of Tamiya's very best efforts. This is fortunate for me, as it doesn't require much to make it a rather spectacular model. So I will try to keep additional superdetailing on this one to a relative minimum, to 'relax' and 'enjoy' it, and try to finish it this year (or even this summer?). We'll see how well I do. On the other hand, it will of course be displayed in the complany of the F50, F40, and Mythos so I really can't slack off that much, can I? :grinno:

And no, it's not going to be red, or yellow. I'm going to delve yet again into the more obscure areas of Ferrari's color pallette....

But enough talking, on to building!

The 360's V8 is very well molded, as you would expect from Tamiya. But that doesn't mean they weren't above a shortcut or two. After studying the engine, I decided that the oil line running into the sump under the engine was going to bother me if I didn't fix it.

http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/6623/3600019oh.jpg

Notice the otherwise rectangular hole for the oil pan has a cut in? The oil line on the actual engine is separate from the pan. So, time for a little surgery.

http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/4762/3600029qd.jpg

Original kit part on the left, new and improved on the right. It fits the shape of the underside of the engine block now.

Next, the oil line will need to be replaced.

http://img490.imageshack.us/img490/2300/3600032ha.jpg

DetailMaster braided line. I hate working with this stuff :angryfire, but if you can get it to behave, it can look great. The fittings on the ends were turned on the lathe.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/1453/3600046mz.jpg

Installed. Better, I think. But, it's really only going to be visible from below. Oh well.

Next, the intakes.

Ferrari went to a bit of effort to make the intake manifold spider and plenums visible on the actual 360, so the kit parts worth a bit of effort to make them presentable. The Ferrari emblems on the red cracle finish plenums are particularly eyecatching.

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/3897/3600051wv.jpg

The kit parts are of course well molded, but I was a bit disappointed to find that the logos were not engraved on the plenums, but included as self adhesive PE parts. While I like SE PE for mirrors and body logos, it's not a particularly accurate way of representing them here. The logos are cast as part of the plenums, which are then painted red. The logos are them revealed by grinding the red finish off of them, showing the alloy color undernieth.

To replicate that look, I applied the logos onto the bare plastic, then masked off the inlets to the air filters.

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/5273/3600062xv.jpg

The texture of the crackle finish was then applied by spraying the part with laquer primer- I used CobraColors Moon Mud. Moon mud is terrific stuff, but it really needs to be thinned. Sprayed straight, it bumps up nicely.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/5766/3600076kv.jpg

Here are the results. The logos were revealed by gently scraping the primer off of them with a sharp toothpick soaked in 99% isopropyl alcohol. Notice the nice contrast in textures versus the bare unmasked plastic?

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/8113/3600089nb.jpg

Everything gets oversprayed with thinned flat red (I used MM Acryl insignia red), and the logos again get scraped clean.

Time to detail it. Tamiya includes the Cavalino logo between the plenums with the chromed parts.

http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/2338/3600096ax.jpg

In reality, this part has a very cast, grainy appearence to it- so, off comes the chrome. Tamiya flat aluminum looks about right.

Detailed.

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/1849/3600108nn.jpg

The hose clamps are of course BMF (what else?!).

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/6146/3600115vh.jpg

Ready for the engine.

http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/8753/3600121zb.jpg

Still needs work, but it's a start. Next I'll need to add an oil filter, and wire up the ignition coils.

Thanks for watching!

Finally, some progress to post!

I've been trying to keep this one as simple and out of the box as possible (I still want to finish this year!)- but I haven't been able to leave it alone entirely. :grinno: Fortunately, the kit doesn't need much in the way of additions.

I thought the interior needed a cargo pocket net between the seats, so I cut out a piece from scrap window screen (I recently rescreened a door, so I had lots of scraps).

http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/7531/3600433hh.jpg

I just glued it in place, and added a cord across the top with a length of heat streatched sprue.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1073/3600447vm.jpg

The interior was all going to be quick and simple until Stevenski posted his idea on how to do interior flocking a few weeks back. I'm still convinced he did this to sabotage my progress. :sly: So, I made shaped carpeting sections for the whole interior. Took me at least a week of tedious work- it's almost as bad as CF decals! But it does look pretty good....

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/3590/3600452ld.jpg

The other thing I couldn't resist doing was converting the 360 to a manual. Tamiya made both of their 360 kits with F1 style shifters. It's a cool feature, but I thought a manual would therefore be kinda unique- and nicely in the spirit of a Spyder. All it would really need would be a new shifter and brake and clutch pedals- the kit includes only a wide brake pedal. So, to the mill!

http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/3845/3600461sv.jpg

The new shifter and pedals, machined out of aluminum.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9226/3600474qb.jpg

Here's the shifter in place. The shift knob is a straight pin, dipped in Alclad.. I put one of Crazy Modeler's tiny self adhesive Cavalino's on the corner of the shift gate plate, and it looks terrific- but it's almost impossible to photograph because of the lack of contrast with the aluminum. :disappoin

http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/4185/3600487ef.jpg

The pedals, ready to be installed. Turns out that the drilled holes on the 360's pedals don't go all the way through- they're just deep enough for traction. So, I covered them with aluminum foil and pressed it into the holes. This was also an easy way to match them to the kit accelerator pedal, which was happily the right shape for F1 or manual.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/3184/3600499lv.jpg

Here's the cockpit tub finished up. The floor mats are done in addition to the full carpeting. The rubber pad under the pedals is just scribed sheet styrene painted black.

I wanted something a bit different than the usual black or tan interiors usually seen in Ferrari's. Turns out that Ferrari will sew your interior in whatever colors of leather you specify- so I thought, "why not green?" (OK, if you've read my review for Crazy Modeler's Ferrari logo's, you've seen the body color for this build.) I wasn't sure how it would come out, but I rather like the look of it. Different, yet still factory.

http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2223/3600270iv.jpg

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/610/3600282zm.jpg

After I painted the leather colors in flat, I rubbed them with a bit of mineral oil to give them some sheene. Here's before and after:

http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/5389/3600295tc.jpg

I think it looks more like freshly oiled leather than paint alone can.

And here it is all done up. The sheene on the leather parts is a bit overstated here because of the lighting I used. It's hard to photograph a mostly black interior!

http://img328.imageshack.us/img328/568/3600331sa.jpg

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4883/3600321cc.jpg

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9620/3600314xg.jpg

http://img328.imageshack.us/img328/1104/3600302hg.jpg

Enjoy!

Next, I believe my excellent accomplices and I are moving on to chassis detailing- brakes and suspension!

So it's been a while since we've had an update. We've been trying, but it's been pretty difficult to keep all of us building to a schedule. Gio has been superdetailing his 348, and is currently working to get the remote locks to work in his model. I've gotten a bit bogged down having too many projects going at once. And Stevenski has blown both of us away. I suspect it's because his build is a V12, and our modest little V8's can't hope to keep up. :grinno: Next time perhaps we'll attempt it with more order and discipline, like those excellent Chinese gentlemen building the 612's.

But meanwhile, in an attempt to get the project moving again, here's an update one the 360!

We've been working on chassis detailing, specifically brakes and suspension. Luckily for me, the brakes included with Tamiya's 360 are excellent.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/2025/360035ka4.jpg

See? Nothing wrong with the kit parts at all. Give it a good paint job and a wash and it will look terrific, even in the wide open five spoke wheels in the kit. Unfortunately, I often have a bit of trouble leaving good enough alone.

http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/1425/360036uw2.jpg

Yeah, the rotors are going to get replaced. But the calipers are still rather good, and will work very well on replacement rotors too.

I've done this kind of surgery before (see my Mythos build)- and carving out calipers can be tedious and difficult work. This time I decided to be lazy about it, and use the mill.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/5136/360037yh5.jpg

Styrene is very fragile for use with machine tools so I don't atempt this often. But fortunately I have a perfect miniature end mill for cutting the slots open.

http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/1542/360039hy2.jpg

The back got cut out with an even smaller end mill.

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/7786/360038iz4.jpg

Then the calipers recieved some detailing with some bits of styrene strips.

http://img506.imageshack.us/img506/1259/360040jp1.jpg

And here's what it looks like on a new rotor. This rotor is a prototype for another project, and was my first ever attempt to do cross drilling.

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9324/3600418nt.jpg

http://img433.imageshack.us/img433/5199/3600424wo.jpg

So far, so good.

Even with the mill, cutting up and detailing the calipers like this is alot of work. So now that I have one decent one, time to cast some copies.

The silicone I'm using lately is pretty stiff, so the calipers will require a two part mold.

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/7615/360050xw7.jpg

Sulphur free pattern making clay and Legos- the only way to go in mold making! :grinyes:

http://img54.imageshack.us/img54/7910/360051wx8.jpg

Now pour the first half and let it set. Then take the mold apart, scrape off the clay, and set the first half in the mold box to pour the second half.

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/4905/360052jt9.jpg

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/2066/360053kn7.jpg

And a new set of calipers to show for it. The parking brake calipers for the rear will be done the same way.

http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/8478/360054ul6.jpg

Here finally are the newly machined rotors. Each is done in two parts, the disc and the hub. Each disc has 70 (!) individually drilled holes. Yeah, it took a while to make them all. :uhoh:

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/3072/360055ua2.jpg

And here are the results-

http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/8633/360056sb3.jpg

The rotors were each sprayed with grey primer, which was polished off of the friction surfaces. The hubs were then weathered slightly to give the impression of the superficial surface rust that tends to appear on braking systems. The calipers still need some detail painting and decals.

I think they're easily the best I've done yet. I love the look of braking systems, so I figure they're worth a bit of extra effort. Fortunately the 360 should show them off well.

Next, onto the suspension.

Thanks everyone! Yeah I like the green, too (and wait 'til you see it with the body!). I could do some lugs for the wheels, but they'd be completely cosmetic- the new brakes hold poly caps just like the kit parts, so the wheels get put on as normal (besides, I can't actually thread anything that small- yet). And no, I think if I had OCD I would probably get more done. :grinyes:

Meanwhile, here's some work on the suspension. Again, I was lucky enough that Tamiya included excellent dampers with the kit. Their only weakness is of course that it's nearly impossible to create a good looking spring in injection molded plastic. So as I knew I was going to replace the spring section, I may as well do the whole dampers, right?

Here are some machined odds and ends and one of the completed replacement dampers.

http://img317.imageshack.us/img317/4246/360058rw4.jpg

These are the new mounting points. They're really really small.

http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/2025/360059vb3.jpg

Ready for mounting. Looks just like the kit part- only shinier! :sunglasse

http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/8062/360060jx3.jpg

In it's new home. The pivot pins are PE bolt heads. I could have drilled them out and put in actual pivots, but it would hardly make a visual difference. On the other hand if there was a good way to hinge the a-frames, it wouldn't be hard to make the damper functional. :naughty:

http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/7974/360061oo2.jpg

But of course the super large discs do a pretty good job of hiding the suspension.

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4115/360062mi9.jpg

This kind of work would really make more sense on an Enzo or CGT, where the dampers and bellcranks are readilly visible- but I'm considering this practice for when I build one! :grinyes: Meanwhile if at all possible, I would like to finish this one by the end of the year. I guess we'll see....

Top down weather has finally returned here, and it has finally inspired some more work on the 360. I've been continuing work in the chassis, including engine installation.

I've had some trouble deciding just how much detail to put into this build. The kit is terrific, and is a great base for superdetailing. My two accomplices have been doing their very best with their builds at raising the detailing arms race to dizzying new heights. However, the more I do on the 360, the more I've concluded that the majority of what I would choose to add to this build simply could not be seen once it's completed. The set of machined brakes are easily visible through the open five spoke wheels- but the machined dampers all but disappear when they're installed. :banghead:

So, after much contemplation, meditation, and inebriation, I have (reluctantly) concluded that there's not alot of point in adding a bunch of machined stuff like oil filter, fuel injector rails, ejection seats and Stinger missile launchers that just can't be seen when the body's on. :disappoin But I will certainly make the best of what will be visible.

One of the little things that bothered me about this kit was the "Don't Touch" warning emblem on the resonator. To represent this, Tamiya included a decal to apply in that spot instread of engraving it. This may have been fine at the time, but when the Enzo kit was released soon thereafter, the emblem was engraved, as it should be. It's a small thing to be sure, but it is definately also visible- and I decided that the decal just wasn't going to do it. So I engraved it myself.

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7919/360013ef6.jpg

I used a handsewing needle held in a pinvise as a scriber and a PE circle template to get the position and shape right, and then carefully did the hand detail by hand.

The kit chrome was of course removed (there will be no kit chrome left on this build!), and it allowed me to remove the wicked mold line around the resonator. Here it is with the chrome resored with Alclad.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/1175/360014co4.jpg

The exhaust train of course then got the usual heat stain treatment. Nothing but Tamiya acrylics!

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/3225/360063bt2.jpg

http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/2050/360064vf5.jpg

It's a real shame it won't be visible when the body is on- it really is a very pretty engine.

The rear brakes get the same treatment as the front brakes- with the addition of the handbrake caliper. Again, it was cut off of the kit part, cleaned up, detailed, and copied in resin.

And of course painted red. Black is the more standard option for the 360's calipers, but red was a popular option. I thought red would help bring attention to the rotors, and match the red plenums visible through the engine lid window.

Now for some detailing of the engine parts that will be visible-

I machined a new set of filler caps. Tamiya includes decent chromed parts, but to my eye they still look too much like chromed kit parts.

The filler caps will be very visible through the engine lid window, and I think a bit more detail on them makes a nice touch. I added some tiny PE ponies from Crazy Modeler's self adhesive emblem set, but they're almost too small to be seen.

The air cleaner boxes is just the straight kit part, detailed with paint and BMF. It's a beautifully molded part, and really doesn't need anything else.

And here's what it looks like all together.

Thanks for watchin, more soon- I promise! :grinyes:

I think the muffler is flipping me off -_-

Yeah, that's exactly what I thought of it, too! That symbol has always looked that way to me. Perhaps it's the Italian symbol for "Do Not Make Rude Gestures". :p (Eh, Gio?)

Thanks guys!

Excellent update. Glad to see you moving on with the build and spending your skills on the visible stuff. I love the machined filler caps, I would love to be able to do this with my lathe but I thinks it's best left with the mill.

Nice update. Your engine bay looks very clean - that is exactly it. All clean, great paint jobs. How are your buddies doing?? Any new stuff from them?

Time for the body- see, I said it would be soon.

Here's the 360 body primed up with some other unfinished traffic on my bench. (Yeah, none of the others have been finished since then either. :uhoh:)

http://img400.imageshack.us/img400/8164/parking23ia.jpg

I painted the body with CobraColors Ferrari Verde Zeltweg Metallic- a very dark metallic green. It's an unusual color on a Ferrari, but the 360 Spyder was made in greater numbers than any other Ferrari in history (only to be surpassed by the 430). So what better car to put an unusual color on? Besides, even in 1:1 I think that bright primaries like Rosso Corsa and Giallo Modena make the 360 look too much like a cheap plastic toy.

Here is the paint before clearcoat. I think it gives the body a wonderfull stately elegance.

But it's bloody difficult to take good pics of! It's definately a color that looks best in bright sunlight. The decals were applied to the paint, to be covered with the clearcoat.

Tamiya supplies nylon mesh for intake grilles. It would do fine, but I found some K&S photoetch diamond pattern screen that I really like the look of. It's the same screen that will be used as the rear grille mesh on the F40, as the pattern matches perfectly.

This is what it looks like installed.

And here is the body clearcoated and polished.

Again it's unusual, but I really like the color on this body. (I think though if I had to pick a color for my own 360, I might have to go with Blu TDF.) The clearcoat is Cobracolors laquer, polished with Tamiya course and McGuire's ScratchX, waxed with Zymol Carbon (I love the smell of carnuba in the morning).

The brakelight strip on the engine lid was done with red 3M reflective tape from my local auto parts shop. I think it looks alot better than a decal strip. The Ferrari logos are from the Crazy Modeler set. They look at least as good as the Tamiya ones, but I find that they stick better- especially to waxed surfaces. Other than that, it's box stock.

Getting close now.... :p
