The South attacked Fort Sumter first and started the Civil War.
If you get down to it slavery had a part in the split but it's very complicated. The South felt that the national government was trying to run them. The Southern states thought that it was their right to decide whether they wanted slavery or not. They looked to the Constitution where it said that any law not addressed was up to the states. To them, they felt that their state's rights were being taken away and that the national government was getting too much power.
Another little bit of information to know is most of the Southern states had few slave owners. Most of the soldiers who fought for the South had never owned a single slave. So why is the Civil War over slavery if most of the soldiers don't own slaves?
One more thing to know is Abraham Lincoln didn't want to outlaw slavery. He thought that if you let it run it's course, it'd go away. He figured that after a while people would say, "hey this is wrong lets stop." Whether that would have worked, I don't know. So that's to the few people that think Lincoln declared war on the South in an attempt to end slavery once he got in office.

EDIT: Fort Sumter is in SC and union occupied fort was attacked by the south WTF cares...
I live in SC, and I can most definitely guarantee that I've seen more Confederate/Rebel flags then anybody. There are stores or as they're sometimes called "gift shops" where all they sell are items with the symbol of these flags on them. And it is true that it's not just mullet-having rednecks in pick up trucks fly the flag. I've seen black people in Mustangs with Confederate license plates on the front of their cars. In SC, you're not required to have a front license plate. Granted, I will admit that there are a lot of racists, but most are brought up that way and don't have much education. What about the rest of them? They just grew up with it for whatever reasons. I've studied theories of symbols and signs in advanced graduate seminars and it's really heads or tails. Do y'all really think these folks with their rebel flags have put so much effort into their own meanings behind their beliefs in this archaic symbol of America's past? More than likely these people just convince themselves of their reasoning and then forget about it and flaunt the flag like someone stated like a concert t-shirt or a favorite beer brand or something. Lastly, I just want to point out how Deadbolt with all of his counter-arguments of why the confederate flag is bad ended his tirade essentially with the bashing of a minority of this country... Jeez.

"On April 10, 1861, Brig. Gen. Beauregard, in command of the provisional Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina, demanded the surrender of the Union garrison of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson refused. On April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply effectively. At 2:30 p.m., April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. The bombardment of Fort Sumter was the opening engagement of the American Civil War. Although there were no casualties during the bombardment, one Union artillerist was killed and three wounded (one mortally) when a cannon exploded prematurely when firing a salute during the evacuation."
http://www.civilwarhome.com/ftsumter.htm
"At 4:30 A.M. on April 12, 1861, 43 Confederate guns in a ring around Fort Sumter began the bombardment that initiated the bloodiest war in American history."
http://www.us-civilwar.com/sumter.htm
"On December 26, 1860, five days after South Carolina seceded, U.S. Army Major Robert Anderson abandoned the indefensible Fort Moultrie and secretly relocated his two companies (85 men) of the 1st U.S. Artillery to Fort Sumter. Over the next few months, repeated calls for Union surrender from Confederate Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard were ignored, and Union attempts to resupply and reinforce the garrison were rebuffed. On April 12, 1861, at 4:30 a.m., Confederate batteries opened fire, firing for 36 straight hours, on the fort."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Sumter
So where in these quotes did the north attack Fort Sumter?
Funny how the "war of union aggression"(or whatever bullshit southerners spout out) was started by traitors and terrrorists attacking a loyal American base.

....:banghead: the south wont( i mean no offence) , because the causes that divided us are no longer regional, they are swept through out the nation. that and i believe that national problems can be dealt with, without war... i think we are a little more settled then our forefathers so we dont have to murder each other over the reasons they did. unfotunately global problems are not the same.

what do you think?
also, what is "dixie"?
Old thread, imma bump for my :2cents:
The "Dixie" is the deep south, which im sure has been said
Down south you rarely see someone driving around with that on the back of their trucks, im thinking of doing it for when i get a truck, i see it ass more of a symbol of the sound rather than "racism"
All it is to me is a flag that represents the 13 colonies, nothig eles, if someone wants to think other wise i dont care
If a black dude wants to call someone a nigga, and i want to call another black dude a nigga, what does that mean?? Nothing.
Its just a way that people view things
Just remeber theres always 2 sides to every coin

Where I live, that flag represent something totally different, its a side category of people here, some call themselfs "Raggare"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raggare
Not only Raggare feel pride in the confederate flag, but also people driving certain mopeds, A- tractors or EPA- tractors, another term only in existance here.
EPA- Tractor;

People here know what it originally represent, but just doesn't care all too much. When i see that flag around here, I get a warm feeling inside my heart. To me, it's Cars, music, beer, girls and freedom.

Not including it's use by white supremacist groups, the confederate flag is not as strong of a statement toward black people as it used to be. It's more of a representation of the division of class within the white race. There was always poor people in America, but when the civil war ended it didn't matter if you were from the north or south, the state of times defined you as the new upper crust or plain old white trash.
The flag may have originated in the south, but in todays America it's not exclusive to the south. What it's really saying today is, "I might be white trash, but at least I'm better than black people".
It's a relic from the era of slavery, the bottom line is it will always represent that time. Some people on this thread even tried to say the flag represent good values and morals. Hundreds of millions of people lived in hell while their host bragged about their world famous southern hospitality.
Most of the flag waving people today are either stuck in a time warp, or they're trying to affiliate themselves with the time before the civil war, the golden age of white trash.

Excuse me but that was pointless, you OBVIOUSLY have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER of what the flag to the people who wear it proudly. It represents the south no less no more. It does not include racism, sexism, hatred, or slavery. let me repeat IT DOESNT REPRESENT NOT A, B, C, NOR D!
Until you live down here in the south you have no concept of what this flag means. If I could I would have a flag set, the tallest the American Flag, the seconds N.C. State Flag, Third POW MIA flag, and last but not least the confederate flag. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL:banghead:

The flag used to piss me off on sight since I'm black and from the north. Of course this is based on the immediate mental connection most black people (in the north at least) make between that flag and slavery/racism. Not to say the flag itself represents racism or an affection of slavery, it just stands out as one of the symbols of that era.
When you hear the words "blue suede shoes" for instance, you immediately make a connection to Elvis Prestley. Nobody as to mention his name, it just immeditely comes to mind. Why? Because those words have such a strong connotation with him. In reality those words have absolutely nothing to do with elvis but the mental connection is still there. The confederate flag has that same type of effect with both a mental and emotional connection being made for many people.
That being said, when I moved to Florida from Chicago I was suprised to see that black people down there don't mind the flag. I still don't really understand why since I never asked but the flag doesn't seem to offend the majority of black people down there. At least not in Tallahassee. Once I saw a white guy drivin a pickup truck with a confederate flag in the back window and a black guy ridin shotgun! I was so confused. But it seems to me that southerners see the flag as more of a symbol of southern pride now as opposed to holding on to fond memories of "the old south". But in the north, the flag remains very much a symbol of times that people worked and are still working very hard to put behind us in this country.
