98 SC2 Computer problem? Help!

I'm not exactly a buff when it comes to problems like this. My girlfriend has a 98 Saturn SC2 and it will start fine, but when she is driving, all of the sudden her dash will light up like a christmas tree, showing all of the service lights, her guages will all drop to zero, and the car will lose all power, but will still run. Apparently it does this several times every trip, but after a few seconds of it, everything goes back to normal. Would this be a problem with the car's computer or what? Please help.

does the car run fine when this happens? have do come to a stop or been slowing down when it happens?

to me this sounds like the belt tensioner is bad or alternator is bad. check the tension on the belt first. if the belt is pretty loose, belt tensioner is bad. if belt is tight, then have the alternator checked out. also while releasing tension to remove belt, make sure tensioner springs back and has good tension the entire motion when releasing it.

Yeah, I'm thinking its just an electrical issue now, maybe the alternator or even just a loose ground. She said it does slow down when it happens. She just told me about her deck cutting out at the same time, so that eliminates the computer.
