Click in steering on an 01

hello again

So after having that nasty grinding sound, I eneded up having to replace a driveshaft (bad CV joint) on the driver's side. However, in the time between a front wheel bearing replacement and getting the driveshaft fixed, I had also inherited a clicking sound in my steering. Time frame between the two repairs - 24 hrs.

A description:

When turning right nothing happens, but when the wheel RETURNS to center position, there is a slight clicking/ clunk in the steering wheel. It does not happen going from left to right. It is noticed when I have the wheel in the left position and going in reverse.

I have three theories. First, and probably most likely I think, is I have a defective wheel bearing, because the click wasn't there before it got replaced. Second is the ISS, which seems to be fairly common, but this seems unlikely becuase it would have been noticable prior to all this work (at least I figure). Third is a bad ball joint or shock mount, but these are left feild theories.

Any help and ideas?

It sounds like you have a defective Hub/Bearing assembly. If it was replaced with a cheapy aftermarket or white box version it is a common problem. A lot of those are made in China. The best are the AC Delco or BCA/Federal-Mogul brands . Also, if the axle nut was not properly preloaded or torque that would cause a problem or premature failure. The torque value ranges fom 151 - 180 ft-lbs depending on what the hub maker specifies. Overtorqueing will stress the outer CV joint of the axle shaft.

The ISS is a possibility but I noticed the clunking sound is more audible at low speed going straight or when parked and rapidly moving steering back and forth.

I had the same symptoms (twice) the first at about 15,000 miles and just recently at 81,000 miles. Replaced Intermediate Steering shaft both times. first one under warranty, second one not ($175.00)
