Weird grinding sound

Hello All -

Long time lurker, first time poster. And thanks for all the help you all have provided to me with my 01 impala... You've saved me bundles of cash.

Heres the problem:

I replaced my wheel bearing/ hub assembly and my brake rotors today (both wheel bearing new within 20K miles). Car runs great, no humming and no pulsating :)

However, a new problem has crept up since the repair. When I have the steering wheel cranks anything past 75% I have a weird grinding noise. I have repeatedly checked for anything hanging or rubbing (such as the tire against the wheel well or a brake pad against the frame) but nothing seems to be the poblem.

It only happens when I am turning right, and I can hear speed of the grind sorrespond with the speed of the car. It does not happen when turning left.

I have a pre-existing need for a slight front end alignmet.

My theory is that I have some tie rod bushings that have gone bad, or possibly a bad ball joint. Is it possible though, that a wheel bearing is causing this problem, and that it may be defective? It does not seem to be the same hum from the bad wheel bearing that I have grown accustomed to.

Any ideas for something to check further?

This might not be your problem but I had a grinding noise in my '01 Impala when turning and it was the P.S. pump... It first started when turning left and then got worse and made the noise whichever direction I turned the wheel... I had Chevy replace the pump and it fixed the problem...

Does it do it standing still? If only when driving look for a " scalloped" tire.

I will add that i changed both front whell bearing units and had a clicking sound.It turned out that both bearing units were defective.I put 2 replacements in the next day and all has been fine for 20k miles.

Yeah, you have to be careful on which brand hub/bearings you use or otherwise you'll be doing a repeat. Those cheapy white box ones at Autozone and Advanced are garbage.

Also, the axle nut must be properly torqued or pre-loaded to specs normally provided by the hub maker or whatever the service manual specifies.

Also, make sure the caliper bracket and caliper mounting bolts are properly torqued down. Lastly wheel nut torque at 100 ft-lbs.
