I finally got my system put in on Tuesday, I was gonna do it myself but since it was my first system I left to the professionals... and im glad I did because they did a great job. I put all new Infinity speakers, components in the front running off an Alpine amp giving each speaker 50watts. And i have 2 Alpine 12's in the downfiring box, each getting about 300w rms from my 2 channel Hifonics amp. I built the amp rack and dynamated the entire firewall and floor under the subs (got the idea from Sportin83, thanks alot). It sounds amazing, I've never heard such a clean system. Let me know what you guys think... here are some pics.

Wow, looks good. Are they 4x6 speakers in the back. I always thought there has to be some way to get more noise from the back of these Extended cabs...

ya the back speakers are 4x6's. and they're running off my deck with that factory wiring. i can turn my head unit at full volume and they sound great, no distortion whatsoever. $69.99 at www.onlinecarstereo.com

Hey I have a kicker sub behind my drivers seat because i have a single cab, and it sounds.......wierd, its alright, but is there a way to make it sound good even with the amount of space i have? I'm thinking of gettin a new sub, not sure... i want a clean bass... mines kinda choppy, is it just the sub? or is it because i have very little space?

what kind of amp is it running off? how many ohms is it wired at? whats the cubic ft of the box? it all depends. PM me.

Ahhh yes!! That makes me think of those younger days when Sir Mix A Lot and LL Cool J were big and I had a decent system in my '89 Mazda B2200. Fosgate, MTX, Pioneer.....Ok, I'm awake again!

Seriously, that's a nice, clean installation. I really like the way the amps are mounted. If I might ask, how much did it set you back?

Where did you get the sub box for your twelves, was that custom built? I've heard a few people say it's hard to fit them in the truck.

onehate02
02-23-2006, 09:40 PM
The amps are mounted on an amp rack i built out of 1/2" mdf and carpeted, along with ripping out the factory insulation and dynamating the back wall and drilling the amp rack to it with sheet metal screws (I got the idea from Sportin83, a member on this site who provided me with much insight. Thanks). I prepped the car myself for installation, and took it to Best Buy and they did everything for around $370. The system is worth about 2k but I got everything for around 1k.
I got the sub box for the two 12"s on ebay for about $100, but i got it almost 2 years ago so i forgot who it was from. It was a place that built these custom boxes and they sold this particular model for ext. cab silverados. It fits absolutely perfect and the only reason it may be "hard to fit" is because the box is slightly shallow so you have to be specific when buying your subs, they have to have a mounting depth smaller than 7". My subs were 6.25".

very nice system. I would like to upgrade my rear speakers also. Do you know how they removed the rear grills?

onehate02
02-23-2006, 09:49 PM
the grille doesn't come out, you have to remove the entire door panel. pretty easy actually, just undo the 2 bolts in the armrest and pop the panel out.

You probably have the sub underpowered. I have 2 Bostwick HDX 12's dual 4 ohm voice coils wired down to 1 ohm at the amp, so they're getting around 500-550 rms a piece and they hit hard as hell. It will rattle stuff out of my little overhead console with the bass test cd I made.

I have a question. I see all of these boxes under the backseats and I was wondering if the backseat sits all the way down as it did before? It looks like it is a little jacked up. I ask because I have 2 Infinity 12's I want to put in mine, but I still use the backseat alot for my son's carseat. It barely fits right now, if I jack the seat up a bit, it may not fit right at all. Nice system though. I didn't know the back where the 4x6's are came out that easy. Those will definitely be replaced soon.
Thanks

with the downfire boxes the seat should fit back like normal with no problems at all. all of the pre-built boxes from companys that i have installed fit without losing anything unless they tell you that you will lose it.

Elroy- thanks, PM sent.

Kenwood- the first box sucks, the mounting depth is 5.25in, make sure you get it around 7in so you can fit some nice subs in there, try the second box.

Texas- thanks man, i'll prob wrap it in some dark greay vinyl in a month or so when im bored. great idea.

One hate said I need a 7in mouting depth the thing is the kenwood subs I have now I belive have a 5 5/16" setup would that be ok or maybe I should get rid of them???? well those subs will fit perfectly in the 5 3/4in box but then again it couldnt hurt to get a box with a bigger mounting depth, even if you decided to still use those kenwood subs, cus if you want to upgrade subs later you could fit a deeper sub in there and you wouldn't have to buy a new box. just find one with about 7" of mounting depth, they're all over. i'll find a couple for you tomorrow. btw whats the rms wattage on each of those subs?

yes i painted my grill myself, i sanded the chrome down and i painted the door handles and tailgate handle. i have 1 mirror painted and going to do the other this spring. i did it all with the color matched spray cans from advance auto parts. and then i clear coated it all too.

That is a good job you did on that grill. Never thought of using the spray from Advance. Have you had any flaking at all? Ever pressure wash it and have trouble? I think, since you painted the mirrors, you should paint the black plastic piece above the bumper and possibly the spoiler below because you really don't have anything black left to match it. Oh, and I'm sure someone has told you already that a roll pan would finish your truck off nicely. I have always liked the look of the roll pans, but if you could see my back bumper you would know that I could never have one. Nice truck.

onehate02-What he (Scotty) fails to realize is that you have installed a fully functional system that is, for the most part, hidden. So, cudos to you for not installing some ostentatious system that keeps you from doing manly jobs, like hauling things in your bed. I agree... This arguing is stupid, gets nothing accomplished. If I wanna read this crap I'll just visit my college football message boards. We're here to help each other out and have nice conversation amongst ourselves. So, please stop!!!

As for the box, looks like a great deal. I like the downfire setup myself. I got a local stereo shop to build mine for me for $230 with OEM tan carpet. I really like it except for the fact that it sticks out past the seat about an inch, so keep that in mind. I have one 12" sub...the box looks exactly like that one on ebay but my sub is mounted on the driver side and it has a long ass port all the way to the passenger side. The stereo guys custom tuned the box for my sub so it sounds really good. But, like I said, there's really no way NOT to have the box stick out a little with 12s... however I really don't care about it cuz I never have to ride in the back... (just have to listen to the complaints from those that do).

Some day I plan on upgrading to 2 10s in a new box. I just kept the system I had from my last vehicle (Tahoe) which was 2 8ohm 12s. Now, since I had my last subs wired in mono, it was a hard hitting bastard. Now that I have only one sub, I really wish it was a 4ohm sub, but what I have still hits clean and really gives me great depth to my music, which is all I'm looking for anyway...I'm not really one to drive around the block booming, letting everyone know what I have, daring them to come and take it.

Anyways, I thought it was an interesting story...
