Most likely the the switch in the door latch is dirty. Some people have had good results with spraying the latch with WD-40 to clean the switch.
It is possible there is a bad ground in the door. Are you having any problems with the door locks?

My 98 Sable wagon has the periodic light will not go off. WD40 - I insert thin red tube between glass and seal as well as any other orifice in the door and spray the a good amount around and the problem goes away till the next time, usually a few months. The switch inside the door seems to have a real problem with moisture. Could be yours is gummed up / rusted open or less likely, a broken wire.

The main thing is to try and get the thin red tube (comes with WD40 can) to poke inside the door cavity so you can get a good spray inside there. You can also go in through the door latch hole. Be imaginative and desperate. WD40 won;t hurt anything. May drip a bit from the drain holes in the bottom of the door but who cares. It is a rust inhibitor as well as a lubricant and is won't hurt low voltage electrical components.
