Guys I found one of these for Sale in my town here. Its in mint condition. NO RUST! (Surprising for a car in Northern Ontario). Its fully loaded, T-Roof, Apline Sound System. Has the LT-1 motor. The guy is calling me in an hour or so with the mileage. He is asking $10,000 for this car. Is this a good deal?
Rally Sport

If the mileage is right.. then I dont know its still a bit high, but we dont know the mileage yet.
x_skaven_x
02-11-2006, 03:04 PM
i just got the call from the guy.. it has 113,000 km which is about 75,000 miles
Rally Sport

Sounds like a good deal to me.. 87 with an Lt1, thats a monster.. if you can though try to talk him down a bit.
x_skaven_x
02-11-2006, 03:24 PM
well i think im gonna offer him that price because im gonna try n have him bring me the car..its about a 5 1/2 hour drive to here
x_skaven_x
02-11-2006, 04:43 PM
what kinda gas mileage can i expect out of this car with the LT-1 motor..Also how much HP and Torque does this car put out?
Rally Sport
02-11-2006, 04:45 PM
Well im sure it puts out somewhere around 260-290 HP, thats what a regular Lt1 puts out. Gas mileage shouldnt be all that bad either since its a more modern engine.
x_skaven_x
02-11-2006, 04:47 PM
ok im just wondering cause if and when I get this I wanna take it to the drag strip :D hehe after a couple mod's anyways
Rally Sport
02-11-2006, 04:59 PM
Cool, dont worry the Lt1 is a very powerful engine, if you didnt know. Also ive heard that Lt1s can run 11s or 12s (Forgot which) with nothing but bolt ons..

02-11-2006, 05:32 PM
guys i have a couple more questions about this car...are part for it hard to find? I mean If i blow a head gasket is my local repair shop gonna be able to order one up asap? Also are expensive to maintain? I already know im gonna spend a fortune on soap and wax cuz this car will jus have to shine!

small block chevy. and remember if this car has the original engine it is not the lt1, it is the tpi=tuned port injection

:slap: You think I would've missed that? Thats why I say he should pay that high, if any, because the guy already did alot of work in dropping the LT1.
Also having the LT1 motor in it means its a REALLY good thing and it isnt stock.

Whats the difference between the stock motor and the LT1? cylinder and litre wise, power, etc
KPot2004
02-12-2006, 06:28 AM
well the way he said it (it has the lt1 in it, not the guy put an lt1 in it or it now has an lt1 ) made it seem like he thought that it came with that. and a lot of people do mistake the 2 engines, same as a lot of people think the tbi is a carb

guys since this car is an automatic...how would i go about smoking the tires? I know in my gp since it was front wheel drive all i had to do was put on my parking break cause it only locks up my back wheels...is this vice-versa for a rwd car? Will the parking break lock up the front tires only and allow the back tires to spin freely?
97cavalier
02-12-2006, 05:24 PM
well on mine all i have to do is smash the gas, that should have enuf power to do that also, but if you just want to sit and spin, break torque it. put on foot on break and hit the gas with the other, don't let it rev to high while the tires are spinning.

Obviously Im not going to invest $10,000 blindly..I'm gonna go up there in person. Ask for the copy of the safety..bring it to another garage and just give one of the mechanics $50 to take a quick look at it see if theres anything he notices. Take it for the test drive...drive it hard!! lol An in the end if im pleased drive the car all the way home.

Hell if I could get 10 grand for an lt1 third gen I might think about doing the swap, then go by a 98+ z28. Sounds like he's trying to get everything out of the car that he put into it and then some. You should be able to talk him down easily.

with 10k I would have done an LS1, and not an automatic trans. Do you know what tranny it has?

Have you test driving it yet?
x_skaven_x
02-14-2006, 02:01 PM
No i havent test drove it yet either...also I dont think there is LT1 in this car. I can tell hes not a real car guy and jus bought it cause of its looks...cause he was saying that the LT1 came in the car from the factory...well the VIN tells me otherwise. I think the guy who sold it too him knew this and just told him that or he just looked up the wrong year of a Camaro. Either way I still think this car is worth it with the TPI motor in it. What do you guys think?
edit --- I havent test drove it yet cause the car is about a 6 hour drive from here so I'm just gonna wait till I get the other $2000 (should be mid to end of next month) and then I will test drive it and most likely buy it.

Well now i guess it depends. Hi guess $8200 would off been an ok deal for an LT1 Swapped 3rd gen done correctly, with all bells and whistles, not some back yard swap, done with minimal investment. But if it is a in fact a TPI car, it really depnds on the mileage and shape that it's in. If it's indeed in great ass shape with low mileage, 20-30k, $8200 would be reasonable. Go up there and check it out indeed.

With LT1 - respectable deal, If, as Link said, it's a good swap, not a Rube Goldberg one.
Without - I'm no expert, but $8,000 here can get me a 1994 z28 (WITH the LT1) @ maybe 60K miles. Either keep looking or talk him down.

I think I'd be willing to pay it just because the next closest IROC from that year that I can find is in Alberta. An I have just absolutly fallen in love with this car. An if I dont get this I have a 1994 Mustang a few hours less away that Im also interested in...but not half as much as this Camaro

Hehehe..I want something fast thats not a Civic or some other ricer...At one point I was gonna get a Tiburon or a Sunfire/Cavalier and just turn it into a ricer but then I realized that it would be a huge waste of money.

Congradulations, you have seen the light! Camaro's rule all. And Firebirds are second.
x_skaven_x

My friend had a firebird but sold it cause it was too hard to drive in the winter. The IROC im looking at has never seen winter before but it will when I own it. Im just going to get it rust coated a couple times a year. And it should only see salted roads till this time next year then I should be moving to Alberta with a couple buddies of mine.

I'd be warry from here on in, once a shadey deal, always a shadey deal.
Personnaly I think the asking price is out of line, IROc or not. At this point now, I'd be questioning if it even is an IROC or just a regular z28 with some decals.

8 grand could get you an ls1, if you looked long enough. Also I have seen several low milage (30000-50000) Irocs go for about 3 to 5 thousand. You should be able to find a better deal, but I've never looked at a canadian auto trader so I don't know how rare they are up there.

Do you have the VIN available? We can atleast tell you what motor it came with? Ending in 8 being an LB9 (305 TPI) or F being an L98 (350 TPI) or vice versa, actually i think the 8 is L98.

Man, i'm just telling you, C.Y.A. (cover your ass) if the guy claims at first to have an LT1 in car that was built some 5 years before the motor ever hit production and "IT WAS STOCK" to the car mind you, in my opinion does not know his ass from a hole in the ground. Plus I still believe he's out of line on pricing.
If you are absolutely determined to buy this car may I suggest:
A: Get the book value of all options and mileage adjustments to argue a fair price.
B: Get a professional vehicle inspection PRIOR to any exchange of funds. And if he won't budge on price, then he is to include one at his cost with printed certified results.
Otherwise, you're about to learn a few lessons in car ownership I don't think you're gonna like.

Like I said from talking to him its obvious hes not a car buff AT ALL! I had to explain to him where to find the VIN #. So I think the guy who owned it before him just told him it had the LT1 Motor and the guy who has it now thinks it came stock like that. I hope you also noticed that I am canadian and refering to the car in canadian dollars. so $10,000 Canadian is about $8600 American. And on the Canadian AutoTrader $10,000 seems to be the consistant price of this cars being sold.

If you don't mind traveling across the boarder you can probably get them for almost half that price if you know where to look. It always seems like I'm bringing this up but thirdgen.org is a good place to look to get an idea about what cars like that are really worth. Their the only classified section devoted to third gens that I've found and there are some smoking cars on there, I've seen some 11 sec cars go for about 7-8 thousand.
