tune-up

i just had a friend give me a 94 sl1 SOHC. it seems to be in dire need of a tune-up. here are the things i already plan to do:

-oil change w/ stabilizer -change air filter
-plugs/wires/coil pack -fuel filter
-fuel injection flush

someone had reccemended to me to do the injection cleaner and the fuel filter. im not sure if its necessary but it couldnt hurt. any other suggestions?

dont use any oil additive! just start with what you have put down and go from there. there can be plenty of things that need replaced or clean but who knows. also if you think its sluggish or under powered, well then theres no hope. the 91-95 sohcs are tbi, stupid idea. a whole whopping 85 ponies at the crank, so really with an aged engine i could easily see maybe 50-70 whp. just depends on how well it was taken care of.

why not use any additives? normaly when i do any oil changes on my previous cars i would use valvoline max life and some lucus oil stabilizer. what do you mean by sluggish or under powered and that there would be no hope? after i do the tune up? im not too sure how to tell what would be sluggish compared to normal. my last car was a 92 SC2 DOHC and i loved it but had an accident with it. would there be any comparison to tell if its sluggish. if it is would it be worth lookin for and fixin in your opinion?

I suggest you change all the belts. You don't want to just get a car and 5000mi later a belt snaps costing as much as the car. You could probably change the gear oil in the trans too. But other than that you should be good to go.

I wouldn't change the coil packs unless they have actually failed.

The single cam engine is pretty gutless from the factory, if its worn out, it will have lost power and they don't have much to lose in the first place.

the reason not to use oil additives is because they are thick and cause everything to foam up, meaning air. the oil sump will suck in the air and starve the engine. the additives cause more damage then help. you may not notice any problems now, but there are.
