No Service Engine Soon Light - Fan out

I have a 91 SL2 my son drove for a year. Got it for about $500.00. It ran great for a year with one problem. The cooling fan would only run with the AC on. He didn't want to spend the money to check it, so he just kept the AC button on. No problem. Ran great for a year.
The transmission then died, probably because he ran it with decreasing amounts of transmission fluid and never bothered to tell me it also was shifting "hard", which I found out when I drove it felt like a mule kicking the car every time it shifted.
Had the transmission repaired/rebuilt. The car runs great now, seems to have full transmission function (not limp mode), and seems to be ready for another 100,000 miles....except that now the fan doesn't work at all, even with the AC on. Also, the "Service Engine Soon" light doesn't even come on at all, not even when you first turn the key to "On." All the other idiot lights come on appropriately/go out, etc.
I've swapped the fan relay out with the horn relay (same part), but nothing changes. The 30amp fan fuse is fine. I haven't tried jumping the fan directly off the battery yet, but that's next.
I'm most concerned that the Service Engine Soon light doesn't come on at all. What does that mean in terms of malfunction, etc. And would that have anything to do with the fan? Anyone know?

well there are quite a few variables to the light not working. maybe you should scan it to see if maybe there is a code. im not sure if you know how to do that, if you dont i can help you out.
but first before i say anything try and jump the fans just to make sure they are still working. because if he ran the a/c constantly it could have fried the motor.

if the fan runs only with the A/C, the ECT needs replaced

Can't get the code out because the check engine light won't illuminate and the fan doesn't run even with the AC on. I'll try jumping the fan and go from there.

Could be just a bulb.
Does the AC function. On my 96 I have a leak and the rad fan will not come on with the AC unless it is charged and the compressor clutch kicks in.

OK, I'm pretty sure the bulb on the Service Engine Soon light is out. I tried to get the codes out and nothing happened when I bridged the A to B pins, so I'm pretty sure the light is completely burned out. What's weird, though, is that I had just turned the car off when I did this. Had the car off and power on and....BING!!!...the radiator fan started running. Take the probes out of the socket and...fan stops.
So the fan obviously isn't burned out. I'm pretty sure that the AC is out of charge since it doesn't engage the compressor at all, so that may be why it isn't coming on when the AC button is pressed in.
I'll try charging it back up and see. Thanks a lot for the help...even though I'll probably be back again.

I thought the fan on my 96 was out. The AC lost its charge. It also took over ten minutes at idle for the engine to heat up enough for the fan to kick in. That was on an 80 degree day.

ok well then, when you probe it goes through and checks the system, so the pcm registered the fan. ects is probably out and due to a/c being discharged, the fan wont kick on if the a/c isnt engaged, which wont engage unless charged.
now you can still check for codes without the cel light. you need either a check light (ive used this method, easier), or a voltmeter and then jump the terminals.
