Hey guys. Unfortunately, my car failed the emissions test yesterday and the person there showed me this code and said he had no idea what was wrong. Well I looked up the code online and it says that, for Toyotas, "P1780" means "Park/Neutral Position Switch Malfunction".

My car is a 1999 Toyota Camry LE

I'm not an expert on cars, so can anyone tell me what exactly is wrong and if possible a repair cost range so i'll know if the mechanic is trying to rip me off.

Thanks in advance, I really appreciate it.

The cost will depend on how long it takes to discover the problem and how much the part costs (PNP switch or ECM or harness) to fix or replace.

It's hard for me to understand how a PNP switch can affect emissions.

In many states, just the presence of a DTC will cause the car to fail the emissions test.

I guess I was not speculating why it failed, only that they shouldn't fail it for that code.

epik,
This will show you what the piece is. Stand in front of the car by the battery and look down on the transmission. Wiggle/check the electrical switch connection. It may be loose or corroded. If you can do minor work then this is an easy job for you. It's the same on a 99 Camry.
