Cold air intake problems

Hi, I own a 98 toyota camry v6 and am doing some upgrades to help with miliage and a slight performance increase. I bought a cold air intake and installed it. No problems for the first 50 miles and then the check engine light came on. Seems the mass air flow senser didn't like the increased air flow. Does anyone know a way around this problem? I wouldn't think they'd sell this for my car if the emmisions on the car was effected. Thanks

Well better think again?
Cold air intake is not what they crack them up to be.
How is it any colder than the air intake that was on it?
And did they gaurantee you better mileage and more power? Sure they did. And they got your money to.
And you are going to tell us it has more power because you can hear more horses going into the engine now. Right?
First thing what code is it setting?
Did you install one of the oily K&N filters?
Does it have any outside air leaks on the inlet air hoses between the maf sensor and TBI?
Did you install all air tempt sensors that was on your old air intake?

Thanks for your input but the question still remains... All orinal parts hook up to the new cold air intake. There is no oiled filter, just an open element type. A "cold air intake" doesn't mean the air is any colder just that the run to the intake on the manifold is straight and open to a positive unrestricted air flow. That does increase horsepower on any internal cumbustion engine depending on cams and compression. There must be someone out there who's had a simular problem with the mass air senser being effected.

For normal driving a cold air intake does not do squat on eng performance.
More HP and gas mileage is way over rated on just a cold air intake add on.
But I know some people can not drive without one and they may look good and sound good but are they really that good?
You did not tell us what code no it is setting.
Any air leaks between Maf sensor or TBI? is hoses good and tight?
The Maf sensor does not care what kind of intake you have as long as there is no air leaks and all of the intake air is going threw the sensor.
One killer of Mass air flow sensors is dirt or oil from a oil type of air filter or bad seal on air filter and in some cases a restricted air filter.
Clean air flow sensor with electrical cleaner and check the wiring plug on it and clear code and see what it does.
Also give us the code no. and engine sise???

Clean the MAF wire with a q-tip dipped in isoproply alochol (rubbing alcohol).
Reset the EFU. Most likely, you've just introduced vacuum leaks, or didn't connect your hoses correctly.
Intakes do nothing. Hell half the time they loose power VS the stock Toyota setup.

Get yourself a y-pipe & put in a high-flow cat. Then go get your heads ported & polished with atleast a quality 3-angle valve job.

Thanks for your help. As far as I could tell there were no leaks. I even sprayed carb cleaner around each possible area. There was no change in engine idle... I do agree that adding on the cold air intake probably won't do anything under normal driving. I've removed it and went back to stock.... What a waste of dough.

I did however add on a performance muffler and a low flow cat. This compiled with synthetic oil has increased my gas miliage to around 25 combined. This is a 3mpg increase over the cars factory rating. This may help others looking to increase miliage especially with the rising cost of fuel.

The car is a 98 toyota camry 3.0 liter V6.

Well if the code comes back get the code no and post back.
And remember tha the computer system is very sensetive to any changes in exhuast and intake air.
And maake sure you do not wind up like this Honda. :lol2: :grinyes:
