What do you mean the column tight, the whole steering column moves or the steering wheel is loose or the steering has excess play in the driving or straight away position?

The whole column is loose like I am missing one of the mounts on the inside of the firewall. And the column seal is trashed. But the steering box feels tight

There is a support bracket to the lower dash with a rubber insulator between the column and the bracket, look there.
