Two good runs in one night. :smokin:
This one happened lastnight as well and was one of the funnest runs yet. While coming home from my buddies house (where I made the post about the Accord) stuck in the muck of 10:00 pm, a black Evo (dunno the year or model) rolls by me in the HOV lane. I don't think he even noticed me at first cause he didn't stop and give me the usual eye along with the blow of valve salute that I usually receive from just about every turboed car that passes by. So he just rolls on by and I figured I may not get a shot at him because of traffic anyway, but I made my way behind him and followed him at our leisurely rate just in case. Well, low and behold, after we travel a couple miles up the highway, there's a break in traffic.
I changed out of the HOV lane a soon as I saw our opening and sped up, putting about 4 cars of distance between us, then waited for his answer. My invitation worked like magic as he pulled right along side me and paced me for a 100 yards or so. I slipped her in 4th and held my course at around 75 mph and then waited for his next move. Next thing I know, he's downshifts and hits the go pedal. He caught me off gaurd a bit so I just nailed the throttle without a downshift to 3rd. This delay gave him a bumper on me, but this was quickly remedeed with a powershift down to 3rd gear. This gave me a nice kick in the ass and I steadily pulled on him throughout 3rd gear up to 105 mph untill I was a good 1 1/2 lengths ahead. as I looked back I saw that he was still on it so I powershifted back to 4th and kept it pinned up to about 125, just before I had enough and shut it down, I looked back and was surprised with a nice 3 car lead on the Mitsu.
After we had slowed back down to less than ludicrous speed I pulled back to the HOV lane to his drivers side and looked over at him for a bit, to get his attention. He knew I was there but didn't act like if for a bit untill he finally glanced over, when he did I gave him a thumbs up for his effort and a nod. He just glared back at me for a bit and nothing else, then looked strait ahead, shaking his head then he fell back and got behind me, following me through the traffic for a few miles before I took my exit.
Had a lot of fun with this one lastnight and I'm glad I finally got to run an Evo. I see a bunch of them around here but always when they're going the other way (this is when they give me the blow-off salute) or when I'm turning and they're going somewhere else. I also liked the guys custom plate that read "hionpsi". As for any mods he may have had, I couldn't tell, but he looked stock as far as I could see.
On a side note, I also saw a turbo late model MR2 with a gaudy but expensive looking peach paint job at a stoplight yesterday. He made a left turn while I was at the light and as he passed me going the opposite direction he gave me a loud rev followed by the hiss of a BOV, then he sped down the street leaving a wake of dark brown smoke from his dual pipes every time he shifted. :grinno:

It is a good thing it was on the highway though, or I'd be playing catchup for a good while.

14.1 - 14.8???
Most Evolutions run sub 14 sec 1/4 miles (usually mid 13s) and trap between 100 and 105 mph. Must have been cruising.

Best i've seen in stock was a 13.8 or so. But most of the stock cars Iv'e seen myself run mid to low 14's. Obviously it's driver related.
What's this about cruising?

We all know how many evos are stock, especially ones with custom plates that say "hionpsi". No way a mid-high 14s car would kill a car that is mid 13s stock, but can even run 11s on the stock turbo.

So now we are judging wins based on license plates? Gimme a break...
We aren't mag racing. Things turn out differently then you would expect sometimes. He never said he beat him from a dig, he said highway, where the awd is a liability. I can believe this.

it does sound like BS though, My best friend has a STI and he obliterates Cobalts! how does a 276 hp car loose to 205 SC on a highway run?
then again I am biased to Mitsubishies so I appologize if I am wrong.....but only if I'm wrong dammit.....Im not a chicken shit to take back a BS call just like that......ok Im done here.......where'd I put that beer?

BullDog71ss

I never had 205 hp. 205 was a pretty big bhp underrating done by GM. A typical SS/SC will put down 205-215 whp in a 4th gear dyno pull. This puts the BHP rating in the 235-245 range. Which is a pretty good difference from GM's rating. I've also got a K&N CAI, which is good for about 10 whp/8 wtq.

evos typically put down 230-250whp at all 4 wheels. there are some weaker stock evo's out there that don't run full boost. they're suppose to run 19 psi then drop off to 16 psi, but some evo's never hits 19 psi.
so maybe you ran a weaker one but your suppose to only match its speed if you casue their lowest trap speed matches your highest trap speed. i've never seem them trap below 100mph and they trap as high as 105mph with a excelent driver. and also for the guys in your area to only run high to mid 14's in your track, those guys are a disgrace, those cars can easily do a 1.8 60' time ( if driven right )
either way, good kill. driver makes a big difference, and i would say you beat the driver, not the car.

I'm not convinced he was racing at all. Maybe he accelerated a little at like 1/4 throttle to speed up, and you though he was trying to race. It sounds like he was minding his own business, especially considering the fact that he just passed you without letting off his BOV.

 Yes, he took a nice friendly jaunt passed 120 mph with me while he was at 1/4 throttle, that's exactly what happend...why didn't I see this before???
No way was he destroying the speed limit while not racing me. The rest of the BS flags I could care less about, I actually think most of them are funny. But this one is a little insulting. Are you saying I'm too stupid to know when someone is, or isn't racing me? How many races have I posted on this forum since I've had this car? It's been at least 15 and I've had another 15 or so that I havent posted. I think I know when someone is trying to run against me by now. Go ahead and say something is wrong with his car, or he can't drive or something else of that nature, but don't insult me by saying he wasn't racing.
I'm not pissed or anything like that, so don't take it like I'm attacking you, but I don't like it when people insinuate that I'm an idiot..whether they mean to or not.
As far as BOV's go..I believe they come with a recirc stock, which is pretty quite. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Well if thats true then I could see you maybe beating him from a roll. Plus I think I read some where that after 100 the Evo tends to die a little (SCC maybe?) Anyways like TAT said you still mostly beat the driver. Which I give you MORE props for  Nothing like beating a car faster than you.

this might be unrelated but arent superchargers supposed to run out of steam after a certain amount of revs? something about them being parasitic and leveling off after a certain speed where turbos still push. I dunno, I personaly love the Cobalt SS but I though the Evo was at a higher leauge. That sucks that you blow 32+ grand on an import thats supposed to be "Rally Bread" and you get your ass handed to you by a domestic 21K windpusher! man that guy musta gone home and taken a sledge hamer to his ride!

Heh, I posted a dyno chart of a stock ss/sc on here a few weeks ago when we had the Type-R debate.
But as far as the blower on the cobalt running outa steam, nah. It pull max power all the way up to the redline at 6500 rpm. It loves high speeds, just gets faster and faster.
Edit: Found it. Here's the link to the dyno.
http://www.cobaltss.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1987
Edit: You were right about them being "rally bread", they kick ass at that type of performance. The problem is, the same thing that makes them so great in the low and mid range (important for rallying) is a liability on the top end. He caught me in my element and he payed for it. If we would'a gone from a dig it woulda been a different story.

My bad, the increase is about 8whp, not much different than 10 whp, but's it's still a bit less. K&N has a dyno chart on their page, and a couple K&N vendors have done some dynos as well and have gained between 7-9 whp from the same intake on an otherwise stock car. I'll try to get some dyno sheets up soon but my mind is racked from looking through the ss.net catacombs.

In stock form my former Evo would run a 13.8 sec. 1/4 mile at 98 mph (Shitane 91 baby). Of course after the piggyback, turboback, and cam gears I was running low 13's according to the gtech pro competition (Didn't get a chance to use the new launch method at the track, cause the new clutch already fried). Anyways, I believe your kill story, as it was from a roll, unless it was against an 05 Evo, as they have the 10.5 hotside turbo in them, which would murder that Cobalt, as it makes considerably more power.

I think the latest make 280 something, and the ones before that made 276. But those were underrated, as they stuck to that deal the japanese manufacturers agreed to some years ago, to keep hp at 276

Bulldog get used to people not believing you. Its okay. ANd honestly i like the Cobalt SS S/C there is a rumor that in 07 they are going to add an AWD option to it. If they do im gonna pick one up for sure. Just swap out that supercharger for a turbo, oh man the power it would make.
Dude, don't ditch the blower! Kenne Bell and a few other companies are sure to make a swap kit for the SS sooner or later here. An SS with a twin screw blower...now that would be kick ass. Plus a blower will cause you much less hassle overall compared to a turbo.
I'd also much rather have a straight up rwd cobalt then an awd. If they did make an awd version I'd probably disable the front portion of it and have the computer retuned to give full power to the back. :evillol:
As far as people not believing me, laf, I'm used to it.

I guess I need to apologize for my comment about the guy not really racing you. Bulldog, you really back up your stuff when someone calls bs on you, that's good. I guess it would be nice to hear "the other side" of the story, from the Evo driver, but unfortunately we usually never get a chance to hear the story from the other driver.

That's alright man, I pretty much take it in stride. No offense taken. But no one likes to be considered a moron you know. Not saying you ment to do that or anything though.
And yes, it is unfortunate that we never get to hear the other side of things when this stuff comes along. However, I wouldnt be surprised if one day the actual driver of one of these cars comes across one of these posts and chimes in. Now that would be some shit.

They friggin didnt. They're still there pissing me off every day I look at my car. Most people don't notice them right away, but I know they're there dammit. I'll get around to fixing them sooner or later, but lately my funds have sorta been tied into my currect money wasting project...Operation: Upgrade fishtank.
That's right, I'm spending my car money to fix my damn fix tank. :banghead:

 Just go to walmart and get a $20 fishtank. Then spend the rest on your car. Get your priorities straight.

Nice stuff! Were those Lionfish? And was that one of those ocean snakes?
Sweet looking game room, my friends gf's dad has one that looks almost exactly like that.
Minus the giraffe, but plus a few bears hyenas and pumas

Yes they were lion fish, no it was not an ocean snake, it was a snowflake eel and thanks for the props on the gameroom.
The other side of the gameroom has about 10 more good mounts that cannot be seen in this pic, one of them is a Mountain Lion(also called a Puma).

that is a damn good kill on the evo........but yeah I think you may have beaten the driver and not the car....but good kill non the less.....killin a car thats power is rated much higher than your is good....even if its easier for you to keep the power constant to your two wheels than it is to do four wheels......racing an awd car in a roll is always the other cars advantage.......do the cai really do that well on a cobalt ss 8-10hp is alittle much.......cause not to compare cars but they say cai will give my car 10-12hp but when put on a dyno they barely put 2-3hp at the most.....

Yup, it's been proven on a dynojet.
The Fujita intake is even higher, it's supposed to do around 13 whp over stock. Still need to see an independant dyno run to believe it though.

Haha. Yeah, there's about 20 more.

all eaton superchargers are twin screw.
And with a supercharger i would want the AWD, could you imagine the launching power of that? Superchargers make boost so low in the RPMS range, combined with AWD. 200 bucks says it would outlaunch an evo or sti.

Doesnt the 05 make about 276 bhp stock? What did the 04 models make?
The 04's made 271hp. I had an 03 Evo. The 05's are recognizable by the fact that they don't have a intercooler sprayer. They dyno about 15whp higher, from what I recall at Vishnu Performance, then the 03/04's. It gets real ugly when you mod them. Unfortunately Mitsu decided to rev limit them to 5K rpms from a launch. Of course that can be fixed with a piggyback system though :D
But yeah, I can believe a kill on an 03/04 from a roll. Evo's are a dog from a roll stock in general. It's from a dig that you need to watch out. Of course after modding they are killer in every aspect, just a might bit expensive to work on.
