Power Windows suddenly quit working

I put the power window down today on my 1997 Grand Marquis and it will not go up or down now. As a matter of fact, none of the windows are working. We assumed it was a fuse, looked in our book that came with the car, and it said that we needed a 20 amp fuse in space 14. Well, there is no space 14 to put a fuse into and none of the slots use a 20 amp fuse. Mostly all of them are 15 or 30. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wondered if the motor could have gone out that abruptly?

Well you are looking into the right section ( Power related ) from the sounds of it, but your book says it's a 20 amp fuse for power windows? most common that I have seen for power windows has been 30amp fuses. It could also be a blown fuselink and those are out at the starter relay on the fenderwell by the battery.

Your car may have another fuse box elsewhere (under the dash..behind the engine..etc) If you find another box of fuses, the one you're looking for could be there!
If not, there's another possibility that you have a bad power window relay. The relay might be somewhere different from the fuses. When you find the relay center (I'm sorry, I do not know where it would be located in a Mercury) there should be a label next to the relays so you will know which one to check.
Also, do the windows not work from all 4 doors? If they work everywhere but the driver door, it could be a switch...but that is unlikely

I don't understand why the power windows on these cars just quit. Mine did the same thing. However, I got the reg and the motors replaced in every window. They all work now, but I CAN'T roll up the windows at the same time or they will stop and get stuck. Its the most rediculous thing. Does anyone know whats wrong?

i replaced the window hardware on my 92 96 and 99. thats 12 windows.
motors and those sliders. they're all the same and a pain in the :banghead: :banghead:
are you getting 12 volts to the driverside console? if i remember right you just wedge it out with a screwdriver

if they only work on the driver door you might have your windows lock!
